Roku has developed a home screen on their devices for the first time in 10 years with a new For You section and a big ad. But if you don’t like the changes, the good thing is that you can make your TV or stick work more or less as it used to be. And it only takes a few minutes.

Customization and quick access to service

While Roku’s changes have been great at suggesting content if you don’t know what to watch, it’s not so helpful if you want to watch a specific show. For example, when I sit and watch It fallsI might forget which service is on.
The Roku wasn’t much help with picking up where I left off, but I was happy to be able to see all the shows I was in the middle of. All this is because of the new Keep Watching part. Sadly, the new For You cannot include this information (yet), although I hope it will in the future. But there are still things you can change that make a meaningful difference.
I will introduce this next part by starting fresh Roku Ultrawhich I could log into, but it didn’t seem to retrieve my data that I viewed on the device. I like sci-fi and comics. What I got were seemingly random suggestions for religious movies with Taylor Sheridan. Something was wrong.
If you’re in the same boat and find For You completely unhelpful, you have two options: remove individual suggestions or remove the entire section.
Remove individual shows from For You
Highlighting a show in For You lets you tell Roku if you do or don’t like the game.
To remove individual suggestions:
- Navigate to show icon you don’t want to either press the * (star) key. on the remote control.
- Scroll down and select I don’t like this show/movie. You can also choose to like or save if you want to keep it.
That’s all! The algorithm then learns that you don’t want that content. However, telling the Roku you don’t like something doesn’t immediately remove the shortcut. The only way I’ve found to do that so far is to restart the device. In any case, the next time you open the home screen, it should be full of new suggestions.
Note that sometimes the display is not removable at all, and you can only select it Add to Save List. So far, I’ve only seen this happen with Savannah bananasafter all, who doesn’t love them? Again, the shortcut disappeared the next day.
Remove the For You section
Maybe you don’t want to hold a new one The Marshals show, and you’re happy to find your own content. You can completely remove the For You section, and it’s very easy.
- Navigate to Settings from the menu on the left side of the screen.
- Select Home Screen in the list.
- Scroll to Recommend lines.
- Select Hide it (or Show if you want to change).
Add Continue Watching for Quick Access
The Jump to section on the Home Page gives you a shortcut to Continue Watching.
Adding a shortcut to Continue Viewing on the home screen isn’t like it’ll just appear automatically, but doing so will help you bypass a bunch of unnecessary icons and give your Quick Access some extra purpose.
To add a shortcut to continue viewing:
- Scroll down the Home page until you get to Jump to the shortcuts part.
- Navigate to Continue Watching tile.
- Press the button * (asterisk) button on the remote control.
- Select Add to Quick Access.
The tile will now appear in the Quick Access section at the bottom of the page and can save you some time in selecting the show you want to continue watching without having to hunt for it. However, I noticed as I was compiling this article that the shortcut disappeared from my quick access and I had to add it again.
The Continue Watching shortcut brings up a carousel of shows you’ve watched recently, though Apple TV doesn’t.
Remove Quick Access

Finally, if you don’t want any of the new discovery tiles to appear at all and just want them to look the way they were, you can do that.
Here’s how you can also remove Quick Access: Settings > Home Screen > Quick Access > Show or Hide it.
That’s all. You now have a clean looking home page ready to take on your next streaming marathon.
