Deadly Hantavirus Outbreak Linked to Cruise Ship Lands in Spain
The Dutch-flagged vessel MV Hondius reportedly arrived in Spain’s Canary Islands early Sunday morning following an outbreak of a deadly disease linked to the ship. Health officials have confirmed at least nine suspected or confirmed cases linked to the outbreak, including three deaths involving a Dutch couple and a German woman. Despite the alarming situation, authorities said no other passengers are currently showing symptoms as evacuation efforts officially begin.
Commuters Evacuate As Officials Urge Public Not To Panic
According to Oceanwide Expeditions, the ship is carrying nearly 150 passengers from more than 15 countries, including 17 Americans. Officials launched a carefully coordinated evacuation plan using small launch boats before transporting passengers directly from buses to planes departing from Tenerife. American passengers are expected to return to the US aboard a special medical evacuation flight coordinated by the CDC and the Department of Health and Human Services before being quarantined in Nebraska for observation.
Health experts have stressed that the public should not panic, as the World Health Organization and the CDC insist that the risk of widespread infection remains low. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesushe said this incident happened”not another covid.” He also explained that hantavirus is often spread by contact with infected rodents and that human-to-human transmission is considered very rare.” Officials believe the outbreak may have started with a Dutch couple who reportedly traveled to parts of South America on a bird-watching trip before boarding a ship in Argentina.

As the investigation continues, more details have emerged about the terrifying moments on the ship. A number of passengers reportedly fell seriously ill during the journey. In addition, emergency evacuations often occurred in different countries as the cruise continued its route through the remote islands of the South Atlantic. This outbreak has now sparked an international collaboration involving the WHO, CDC, and several health organizations. Finally, authorities are working to determine how the virus spread on the ship.
