Euphoria’s Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje in Backlash to Rue’s Death

Euphoria risked killing off the main character in the season 3 finale – and now Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje you are talking about potential backlash.

Akinnuoye-Agbaje, 58, talked about her character Alamo taking part in Rue’s play (Zendaya) death, only to tell Us Weekly at the MPTF NextGen Summer Party, presented by Delta Air Lines and Waymo, “Look, fans who eat crap. Their show is really the first. I’ve done my part. Everything they say and do is part of them so that’s where I leave it.”

On the Sunday, May 31, episode of the show, Alamo gave Rue pain pills that turned out to be laced with fentanyl. This confirmed that Alamo had deliberately given out the drugs that Rue knew she would start again with – and that he was planning to kill her after he had previously found out that she was working with the DEA to bring him down.

“The good thing about Euphoria – first of all – is the amazing performance by Zendaya. She narrates the show and we see it very much from her point of view,” the actress told us at the annual fundraising event, which humbles Hollywood while raising money for the Motion Picture & Television Fund in support of entertainment professionals working with retirees.

Akinnuoye-Agbaje has noticed that Euphoria has a strong ensemble cast, adding, “One of the nice things is that it opens up the perspective of a lot of other characters. Whether they’re within Rue’s team and the place, you’ve got Laurie’s team and you’ve got Alamo’s team and you’ve got Rue’s friends. There’s room to explore those backstories and those events.”

He continued: “This is TV. [they could explore the world more.] Whether they want to or not … I don’t know.”

Despite Rue’s tragic end, Akinnuoye-Agbaje praised the creator Sam Levinson in his opinion.

“This period has been greatly influenced by religious themes about God and beliefs,” he commented. “All of that shines through in the last episode. It summarizes the consequences of everyone’s decision so you can see the reckoning. It’s poetic and sad. There’s responsibility and creativity in the message he’s sending.”

Akinnuoye-Agbaje went on to talk about how Rue’s death brought Ali’s story to a halt (Colman Domingo) the story of seeking revenge for his honor. This allowed for a Western-inspired sequence that left the Alamo dead — but not before a major conflict.

“Sam’s vision for this was heavily influenced by Western images. He was going to do this in a Western style but in a modern way,” he said. Us. “It’s amazing how he connects that to the narrative of the show and those characters who grew up building that narrative.”

Looking ahead, Akinnuoye-Agbaje has shown support for more Alamo – perhaps in spinoff form.

“I could have resisted it. It’s a rich character and we got to see a good back story,” he said. “It would be interesting to see how you got to that mountain house. We’ll force it.”

Euphoria currently airing on HBO Max.
