AJ Ewing hits first career homer as Mets sweep Tigers

Finally the moment came for the Mets to sweep, with their shiny new toy as a key component.

It was their 14th streak of the season. The Mets had been swept four times during that span, but their sweep aspirations never came true.

On Thursday they hit their bats for the second time in three days since the arrival of rookie AJ Ewing from Triple-A Syracuse. Their three-game sweep of the Tigers ended with a 9-4 victory at Citi Field.

Ewing hit his first major league home run as part of a flurry that allowed the Mets to start thinking about this weekend’s Subway Series on a positive note. Brett Baty, Mark Vientos, Juan Soto and Marcus Semien also went deep on the day as the Mets set a season high with five homers.

Ewing, a 21-year-old outfielder, had a major league debut to remember, including a four-run home run in his first game Tuesday, pitching a 10th inning the following night and clearing the fence for the first time in the third inning Thursday.

Maybe, the Mets (18-25) got the momentum they need to get their season going. Winning at least two games in Queens against the Yankees this weekend could solidify that view.

Nolan McLean got the Mets going in the seventh after a bad first inning. The rookie right-hander allowed three earned runs on six hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.

McLean sank the Mets in the first inning by allowing a three-run homer to Gage Workman. McLean issued a walk and single before giving up his fourth homer of the season and second in as many starts.

Ewing started the comeback by clearing the right field fence against Keider Montero leading off the third.

Soto hit an RBI single in the fifth that gave the Mets the lead. Carson Benge singled and stole second to ignite the rally. Vientos delivered a two-run homer that gave the Mets a 6-3 lead. It was the fourth homer in 10 games for Vientos, who started the day with an .811 OPS in May.

Hayden Senger, in a safety jam, blasted out in the sixth to extend the Mets’ lead to 7-3. The knockout punch was delivered by Soto and Semien, who returned home later.
