Inside Trump’s AI plan to boost the federal government

A top official involved in the Trump administration’s new AI “Tech Force” program offered a glimpse inside the White House’s push to include AI engineers within government agencies and overhaul the way the federal government uses technology.

“This is a public-private partnership where we will bring 1,000 engineers to the government to help us complete the modernization that is most important to our American people and is very important to ensure that technology is a high-quality citizen in the government,” said Scott Kupor, director of the Office of Personnel Management, on Tuesday in “Varney & Co.”

With help from companies like Microsoft, Palantir, Salesforce and Snowflake, Kupor said the program is designed to embed engineers across major government agencies rather than in a single office, allowing experts to work directly on development efforts in departments including the Treasury Department, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Defense.

Palantir, for one, is already playing a key role in integrating artificial intelligence at the Department of Defense, Kupor noted, pointing to the company as an example of how advanced technology can be used effectively within the government.

“There’s no doubt that Palantir is a leader in that area, and what we want to do is make sure that other parts of the technology, other parts of AI go into government,” he explained.

“Today, what’s happening is we rely heavily on contractors and consultants, as you may know. We don’t have a lot of domestic talent in core AI, modern software development, and the Tech Force is really aimed at making sure that the government can be a first-class citizen and attract those kinds of people, just like Palantir has done in the government, but we also want to make sure that the government’s talent is long-term.”

Kupor said the engineers brought in through Tech Force will be placed directly within the agency and supported through a structured program that includes professional development, speaker series and networking with private sector partners.

He said that applications for this program are coming in, and the management expects to start making offers in the next 30-45 days.

At the end of the program, many employees are expected to move into roles in the private sector, with experience gained working within the federal government.

“Every objective, agency by agency, [to] find out what all the big modernization efforts are and how do we make technology, how do we make AI really important to the American people? “he said.
