What is the 9-9-9 challenge? MLB’s Viral Beer, Hot Dog Experience

If you’ve spent any time on TikTok or Instagram in the past year, you’ve likely seen it: fans at baseball games chowing down nine hot dogs and nine beers in nine innings, documenting the entire ordeal for Internet fame.

It’s called the 9-9-9 challenge, and it’s gone from DIY fans to an officially licensed MLB stadium food item seemingly overnight.

Here’s the challenge, where it came from and whether the official version lives up to the hype created online.

What is the ‘9-9-9’ Challenge?

The 9-9-9 challenge started the way the best internet trends do – naturally. It was an unofficial endurance test fan’s dream: eat nine hot dogs and drink nine beers (responsibly) over the course of a nine-inning game.

The retired NFL star just wanted to ask a simple question about dining habits. The Internet had other plans. JJ Watt, 36, created one of the worst debates on X this week when the former Houston Texans defensive end posted what he called a “real question about the restaurant situation” on March 11. Within 24 years […]

No branding. There is no business sponsor. Just vibes, stomach capacity and bragging rights.

Then the challenge exploded on social media, and the content took off. Nine hot dogs lined up on the tray, inning-by-inning updates, last (or sad) bites – all made for reels and TikToks.

JJ Watt Attempts Viral ‘9-9-9 Challenge’

The moment when the challenge really hits? A retired NFL legend JJ Watt tried the challenge at a Milwaukee Brewers game last year. He finished it in just 5.5 innings.

Five and a half innings. The man ran 9-9-9. That Instagram reel became the kind of content that turns niche followers into a mainstream cultural moment.

The story continued when the Philadelphia Phillies debuted their version of the challenge at Citizens Bank Park during the 2025 postseason — making it one of the first clubs to bring the internet trend to a real stadium experience.

Now MLB Gets Money From ‘9-9-9 Challenge’

On March 23, MLB announced that it has partnered with a competing food star Joey Chestnut making the 9-9-9 baseball challenge a reality at six MLB stadiums for the 2026 season.

The six stadiums are: Citi Field (New York Mets), Citizens Bank Park (Phillies), Coors Field (Colorado Rockies), Daikin Park (Houston Astros), Kauffman Stadium (Kansas City Royals) and Oracle Park (San Francisco Giants).

“The new season brings an opportunity to renew the fan experience, especially as we prepare for the 2026 MLB All-Star Game in Aramark’s hometown of Philadelphia this summer,” Aramark’s president and CEO. Alison birdwell said.

“With that momentum in mind, our teams are committed to creating new culinary concepts, reimagined experiences, and unique activations across our portfolio – all focused on expanding what makes baseball so special and creating signature moments that fans will cherish long after the last game,” he added.

The New ‘9-9-9 Baseball Challenge’ Comes With a Catch

Before you join the group discussion, know this: the official version of MLB is not the same beast as the DIY original.

Instead of full-sized hot dogs and beers, the new challenge consists of “nine airline-sized beers and nine mini hot dogs” and is available to “fans 21 and older with valid ID.”

The challenge costs between $54.99 and $65, plus tax and tip, depending on the platform.

SF Gate took to X after the challenge at Oracle Park and revealed that it comes with nine glasses (average 3-4 ounces) and a tall can of Coors Light.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough beer to fill each glass even halfway.

So: nine small glasses, one tall can, and a price tag that pushes $65 before tip. The beauty of nine glasses on a tray is undeniable, but fans expecting the full streaming power of the Internet original may find the official release a little lacking.

The 9-9-9 baseball challenge started as pure fan culture – no permission required, no corporate affiliation, just a silly personal challenge and a phone camera.

Now in operation is a stadium with parts the size of an airplane and the Joey Chestnut partnership.

Whether that’s cool evolution or watered-down cash grab probably depends on how full those nine glasses are.
