Beth, on the other hand, is focused on her schedule around husband Rip (Hauser). Reilly, 48, has been mulling over the idea of a new show focusing on Beth.
“I really like Beth, and who she is after certain things happen,” she told Town and Country in November 2024. “Who’s quiet? As an actress she’s like, ‘Ooh, let me go.’ Wouldn’t it be fun to watch Beth go to therapy?”
Reilly noted that he didn’t mind spending much time with Beth.
“I remember reading [the script for the pilot] as I was cleaning our house and thinking, ‘Oh, s***. It was like slowly putting down the gauntlet. The challenge of it piqued my interest,” Reilly recalled about the phone call with Sheridan that got him the part. Then I said, ‘F***, I didn’t audition.’ I panicked, because I didn’t know how to do it. And it took me a minute to find him.”
The actress admitted that there have been ups and downs in playing a character like Beth.
“I love getting ready to play her, because there’s an adrenaline rush to Beth and it’s very empowering. But it’s also incredibly painful,” she said. “I have to hide myself to wear some of that, I love him but I can’t live with him.”
Reilly relished the opportunity to play a queer woman, saying, “It’s not just about playing strong, capable women. That’s missing the point. Male characters can be queer, but they can still be heroes. Full spectrum. And I think there’s courage in embracing the shadows. How can you be an honest person if you don’t own some of your darkness?”
