The Super Mario Galaxy movie‘s success at the box office is undeniable. It could literally cross the $1 billion mark before all is said and done. But the reviews are mixed, to say the least. To put it simply: Audiences love it, but critics aren’t convinced.

The ratings gap on Rotten Tomatoes paints a positive picture. Audiences rated it 88 percent on average, celebrating the “spirited characters” and “fun surprises.” But its 42 percent critic rating sums it up as “frenetic” and “weightless.”

“Like its predecessor, it could make tons of money,” wrote Mashable Entertainment editor Kristy Puchko in her review. “But that won’t make it right.”
