Robeisy Ramirez Splits With Coach Ismael Salas

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramirez has ended her working relationship with veteran trainer Ismael Salas after a face-to-face meeting in Las Vegas, ending a multi-year relationship.

Spanish-speaking boxing journalist Cesar Seda reported that Robeisy went to Las Vegas to tell Salas in person that his future plans would not include him as a head coach. This decision was described as acceptable, the two sides parted ways.

The move comes after Ramirez’s career has struggled. The Cuban southpaw has not fought since a sixth-round knockout loss to Rafael Espinoza in their December 2024 rematch for the WBO featherweight title. That loss left Ramirez out of action for a long time and added to the doubt about his direction at 126 pounds.

Robeisy made a name for himself in the junior ranks, winning Olympic gold medals in 2012 and 2016 and developing a reputation as one of Cuba’s most talented professionals. The transition to the professional game was uneventful. Although Ramirez held the WBO featherweight belt during his ascension, his dominance as an amateur was evident in the blink of an eye.

Part of the adjustment was physical. Robeisy competes at a heavier weight than he did in his scholarship days, and the move to featherweight has at times left him looking taller and more dehydrated than the fast, sharp fighter who won Olympic titles. The quickness and effortless movement that once defined his style have been rare during his professional run.

Salas’ break may signal an attempt to reset his career. Salas has been mentoring Ramirez since the beginning of his professional career and was a part of the team during his rise to the title. Changing coaches often marks the start of a new career for fighters looking to fix technical issues or revive stagnant momentum.

Robeisy still possesses the pedigree and experience that once made him one of the most decorated rookies of his generation. The question now is whether a new voice in the corner can help him regain the speed and sharpness that defined his Olympic years.

For Ramirez, the split from Salas looks less like a dramatic breakup and more like a tacit admission that the professional version of his career hasn’t lived up to his amateur promise. The change in camp may offer a fresh start, but it also reflects a simple truth: the Olympic champion still has work to do to prove that his professional career can reach the level many had hoped for. At 33, Robeisy does not have youth on his side.
