The timelines of freedom in Sabrina Ionescu, Satou Sabally appear during a strong start

Satou Sabally and Sabrina Ionescu returned to action as full-time starters on Monday after missing the Liberty’s first four games.

Sabally had been sidelined due to a cyst, while Ionescu was absent due to a left foot injury sustained during the team’s final pre-season game.

Both players feel Monday is the right move.

“It was great,” said Sabally. “I feel like I’m getting my breath back and I’m happy to finally be on the court.”

Neither Sabally nor Ionescu would make their season debut Thursday against the Golden State Valkyries.

“Whenever the coaching staff tells me, ‘Okay, you’re good to go,'” Sabally said. “I feel like I always want to go 100 percent, so I feel like whenever they give me the green light, I’ll be there.”

Ionescu said it might be a game-time decision.

“I can’t make that decision right now,” he said. “I’m just like every day I see how I improve, how I feel, how I react to what I did the day before.”

Sabally did not reveal the details of what he went through in the last two weeks.

She missed two preseason games for the Liberty for rehab purposes after persistent concussion symptoms she suffered in last year’s WNBA Finals derailed her first season.

Sabally was sidelined for all of Unrivaled and returned to basketball activities in March.

The night before the Liberty’s season opener on May 8, the team revealed that Sabally was sidelined with a cyst. Coach Chris DeMarco later ruled his situation as day-to-day.

Sabally did not accompany the team on its three-game road trip, which includes stops in Washington, DC, and Portland.

Sabally, who played three seasons at Oregon, wishes he had experienced the situation at the Moda Center in Portland. He said it “upset” him to be away from the team.

But he stayed in New York, where he focused on his recovery.

Sabally credited Portland with getting the franchise’s first win while handing the Liberty its first loss.

However, he is happy with the team’s 3-1 start.

“That second game [against Portland on Thursday] he just showed how we can go back, and how we adjust and how the game should have looked in the first place,” said Sabally.

So I like to see the changes from Game 1 to Game 2.

Liberty’s top priority this offseason is to re-sign Ionescu, Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones. But Sabally was a free agent signing out of the organization.

The three-time All-Star led the Mercury in scoring with 16.3 points per game and averaged 5.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.3 steals in 39 regular season games.

His size, height and versatility make him a perfect fit for the new Liberty system. His focus now is to ensure his condition is where he should be playing.

“For me, it always goes through the players you are used to but you do it with a little fatigue and you fight that fatigue when you beat them,” he said. “As an athlete, I feel that you tend to always be in better shape than you really are so it’s about being kind to yourself and working on yourself.”
