US State Department officials are warning Americans to reconsider travel to a potentially dangerous area that often attracts young tourists.

The State Department updated its travel advisory for Azerbaijan on April 28, warning Americans to reconsider travel to the country.

Azerbaijan is located in the south of the Caucasus, at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia.

The advisory stands at Level 3, urging Americans to reconsider travel due to safety and security risks.

Azerbaijan, a former Soviet Union country known for its lava volcanoes and unique landscapes, has become a popular destination for young travelers.

Although Azerbaijan has long been under a Level 3 advisory, the latest update adds new warnings, with the US State Department advising Americans not to travel to its southern border with Iran given the risk of conflict.

The country borders Russia, Georgia, Armenia and Iran.

The country remains a good destination for aspiring travelers as US officials urge recruitment. (Stock)

Officials say the region has been dealing with Iranian airstrikes and missiles since US-Iranian hostilities escalated in late February.

“Land mines and unexploded ordnance are present throughout the region.”

“Don’t go to the southern border region because of the risk of conflict, unless this is your best way out of Iran,” the advisers said.

The advisory also notes that terrorism is a problem in Azerbaijan, as people “can attack with little or no warning.”

US officials also warn against traveling to the Armenian-Azeri border “due to the risk of landmines.”

“Land mines and unexploded ordnance are present throughout the region,” the advisory noted.

“Many of them are not marked, so it can be difficult to know where they are.”

Other areas of Azerbaijan that contain landmines are Aghdam, Aghdara, Fuzuli, Gubadli, Jabrayil, Kalbajar, Khankendi, Khojali, Khojavend, Lachın, Shusha and Zangilan.

Azerbaijan is the latest in a series of destinations flagged by US officials.
