The Dallas Stars are facing the reality of the Jason Robertson market

Fourth Period’s Dave Pagnotta was on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio with Steve Kouleas and Craig Button and was asked about Jason Robertson of the Dallas Stars. Specifically, has the market determined that Robertson should be paid in the $14 million range?

July 1st is fast approaching for the Dallas Stars and Jason Robertson to receive an extension
Craig Button: “So, let me ask you this, just a little bit about Jason Robertson, and you say the number 14 million. Is this similar to what happened in Winnipeg? (Mark) Scheifele and (Connor) Hellebuyck signed those big contracts, the market changes, Kyle Connor is signing $12 million. Is that something where that’s really true, and Dallas just wants to face the truth?
Dave Pagnotta: “I mean, it’s possible, it’s possible. I mean, it’s like, it’s tough, you look at the situation in Dallas, and Dallas looks at itself, obviously a contender every year. It’s a contender of the year. You have to fix a few things to get over the hump, which obviously other teams have done.
But I think they look at this and go, because we want to compete, and we want to continue to chase the Stanley Cup, we have to give ourselves a little flexibility as the season goes on here.
Jason Robertson Rejects Kraken Offer, Blues and Rangers Make Mason McTavish Offer
Since they love Jason Robertson, and it’s important to keep him at a significant number like say $14 million, it puts them in a difficult situation all season long. We must not go ahead, because we know where the title will go a year from now, but we are putting them in a bad place.
Now, there are other teams looking around and hiding, you know, what’s $14-$15 million, Ottawa, others, Seattle (rejected offer), we’re willing to give you that and cough up the draft if we need to.
So, Dallas is definitely checking things out. I think they want to find out and this is another situation, guys, where I think we have to get something here over the weekend, or at least, by the end of the weekend, before deciding what other options we have to go in here. Because of all the work, because of all the talk that’s going on, this might be an opportunity where, if we can find a middle ground, and it certainly doesn’t look like you took $12 million. Then we have to explore other options.
It’s kind of the nature of the beast here, how things go. And with those contracts you mentioned with Hellebuyck and Scheifele, and so on. You get your bank, you go in, but I think there’s also an understanding that if the team can’t compete. If we can’t get over the hump, then we’ll explore the possibility of trading it. I think it’s more towards Hellebuyk at the moment than Scheifele.”
NHL Rumors: Rasmus Ristolainen, Sergei Bobrovksy, and Jason Roberston
NHLRumors.com Note: We know that Jason Robertson turned down two, or three, offers from other teams, as well as the Dallas Stars’ $12 million offer. Is Dallas saying to the teams that trade him, “Good luck, make a deal, and don’t let him talk to them”? That’s an option now.
We know the Dallas Stars don’t want to exceed Mikko Rantanen’s $12 million AAV. It may be necessary if they want to retain local talent. With the Vegas Golden Knights, Utah Mammoth, and Columbus Blue Jackets all in the mix for his services, Robertson is looking to go where he thinks he can win after finding success in Dallas.
Also, the market was organized by Adrian Kempe, Kyle Connor, Pavel Dorofeyev, Alex Tuch, Martin Necas, and of course, Leon Draisaitl. Was Robertson underestimated by the Stars selecting Rantanen as the team’s highest paid player? That would be a possibility. But this player who scored 40 goals is visited by the league.
