Paula Pell Thinks She Wasn’t An SNL Cast Because Of Her Weight

Paula Pell worked as a writer on Saturday Night Live almost twenty years but he has never been one of the official screen players of the game.
“I don’t want to think, but I heard, here and there, small things and who knows because we were all there when they choose people and it doesn’t happen,” said the actor, 63, during the Tuesday, May 19, episode of the game. Amy PoehlerThe “Good Hang” podcast. “I mean, not just randomly, but there’s reasons you don’t think they’re reasons and all this, but I suspect … I was a big wife.
Pell explained that when he joined It’s SNL in 1995 there was no plus size representation on any TV show.
“Then the same people started to appear Roseanne Barrlike people who had really good-looking bodies, but I was definitely not the beauty of that place,” she said.
Pell revealed that he did not do the interview It’s SNL but instead he got a call to meet him Lorne Michaels. The comedian, who was working at Disney World at the time, flew to New York City for the meeting.
“I got there again [I] I was scared and entered. He was two hours late and I sat down with him,” he remembers.
Pell joked that he never got an official job from Michaels but somehow ended up working for the writers. Before joining It’s SNL behind the scenes, he shared that he was “not a writer” and had previous comedy experience doing live shows in parks and theaters. However, he has never expressed his desire to pursue acting in this game.
“Although I have written short stories, I don’t know how to do it,” he said about writing jokes. “I was too afraid to show any desire to play.”
Pell worked It’s SNL from 1995 to 2013. During his time, he created some of the most famous characters in the show and sketches including Debbie Downer, The Spartan Cheerleaders, Aunt Linda and others. Pell occasionally makes cameo appearances in sketches – usually as a parent or teacher.
However, Pell eventually found the courage to act later in life as he participated in shows like 30 Rock, AP Bio, Love, Girls5Eva and more. He is currently acting in Pigogo’s play The ‘Burbs series close Keke Palmer, Jack Whitehall and more.
“That’s why I’m so happy to be able to sing later in my life because I finally got that out,” she said.
