Joe Rogan was surprised by the number of arrests reported in the UK for online speech as he spoke to the British comedian on Wednesday’s “Joe Rogan Experience”.

“Over 12,000 people have been arrested in the UK last year for posting on social media. And if you read some of those social media posts, it’s not even remotely shocking,” said Rogan. He went on to say that these are not calls for violence, but rather statements like “Immigrants are coming to this f—ing country and causing all these crimes,” leading to “a knock on the door. ‘You’re going to be arrested.’

“I worry that the American people think we’re crazy sometimes,” said Andrew Doyle, Rogan’s guest on this episode.

“We do!” Rogan replied. “We do now, yes, we think you lost.”

Rogan was referring to a report by the UK newspaper The Times, which said, “Police arrest more than 30 people a day for offensive images on social media and other platforms,” adding that “Information from the police station obtained by The Times shows that the police arrest about 12,000 people a year under section 127 of the Communications Act 2003 and section 8 9 of the Harmful Communications Act.”

Rogan was talking about a report by the British newspaper The Times, which says, “Police arrest more than 30 people a day for abusive texts on social media and other platforms.” The report added that “arrest data obtained by The Times shows that the police arrest about 12,000 people a year under section 127 of the Communications Act 2003 and section 1 of the Harassment Communications Act 1988.”

“We also think that something has happened when your leaders are deliberately trying to hunt down your country. It seems that they are trying to bring in as many immigrants as possible, take care of them, not the British people, and make it public so that everyone knows what they are doing and create chaos in the streets because of it,” said Rogan.

“Yeah. I mean, people have a phrase, ‘anarcho-tyranny,’ you know, where you punish people who don’t break the law, but you protect those who do,” Doyle replied.

Doyle noted the UK’s laws against “extremely inflammatory” speech, saying he found those laws to be abusive in their own right.

After the comedian talked about an incident where a man was arrested for causing “concern” over a funny picture he made, Rogan scoffed.

“Here’s the problem. You can find anything offensive. You can find anything very offensive if you’re overly sensitive.”

After noting many examples of legislation in the UK in recent years against defamatory speech, Doyle noted that even the threat of visiting the police to warn people has a negative impact on speech.

“What I can say is, like, it’s worse than people think because 12,000 people are arrested a year, it’s worse. But since the police are always checking what you’re doing when you’re doing something that’s not a crime, that’s even worse, right?” Doyle asked. He went on to say that in Scotland, the police have a database of offensive jokes and that there have been bills to prosecute people for statements made in their homes or pubs.

Doyle was surprised by the current state of affairs, noting, “You’ve seen videos of people going around, the police knocking on people’s doors saying ‘you said this on the internet.’

“It’s crazy,” Rogan admitted.
