Aaron Rodgers never returned to Pittsburgh after all.

After reports emerged last Friday that Rodgers was expected to visit the Pittsburgh Steelers as they prepare to return to the team he played for last year, many hoped that the months of waiting were over.

However, during an appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show” on ESPN this Monday, Adam Schefter said the Steelers or his agent were not aware of such a meeting being planned.

However, there were reports of Rodgers’ whereabouts in the world, with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reporting that he was in the Steel City, although he was not scheduled to visit with the team. A report from 93.7 The Fan added that he was in town to play golf.

Either way, the verdict remains on whether Rodgers will be a good fit for the Steelers, but the storied franchise has given itself some insurance if the four-time MVP quarterback decides he wants to play elsewhere.

The Steelers exercised an unrestricted free agent tender on Rodgers last month, allowing Pittsburgh the right to match any offer Rodgers might receive from another team.

Despite doubts from other camps about Rodgers’ return, Schefter noted that he believes he will be on the Steelers’ practice squad. The Steelers have their OTAs scheduled to begin next Monday.

With Rodgers at the helm this past season, the Steelers went 10-7, even clinching a playoff berth after Tyler Loop’s infamous game-winning field goal capped the season. The Steelers ended up losing to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round, extending the team’s playoff streak to eight consecutive seasons, including three consecutive campaigns.

Rodgers, slated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame when he decides to retire, threw for 3,322 yards with 24 touchdowns on seven catches in 16 games for Pittsburgh in 2025.

The Steelers renewed their team this season, as Mike McCarthy, Rodgers’ old coach with the Green Bay Packers, took over from Mike Tomlin, who was released from Pittsburgh after 19 seasons (2007-25). While DK Metcalf and Rodgers built chemistry this past season, the Steelers also added veteran wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. in a deal with the Indianapolis Colts, while adding Germie Bernard from Alabama in the 2026 NFL Draft.
