Jasmine Crockett says GOP rigged her primary election: ‘That’s what Republicans love to do’

U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, says Republicans tried to rig her primary race against Texas State Rep. James Talarico, District-50, on Tuesday after the state Supreme Court issued an emergency ruling against his campaign’s request to give Dallas County voters an extension to resolve confusion over Republican-led changes to polling places.

On Tuesday, Republicans and Democrats did not hold joint primaries, leading to polling place restrictions that Democrats, like Crockett, say are denying voters.

Crockett’s claims came after the Texas Supreme Court overturned a lower judge’s decision to keep polling places open longer, ordering that any ballots cast after the initial closing time be split. Democrats have pushed to keep polling places open for longer periods within polling place limits, which has resulted in Republicans and Democrats not holding primaries.

“You know that Dallas County so many votes, in my opinion, we won’t know all the results of the election tonight,” Crockett told supporters gathered to celebrate his victory.

“So, my news is, we’re not going to have election results tonight, in my opinion, based on what happened in Dallas County. Unfortunately, this is Republicans love to do. And, so, they went straight to Dallas County, and I think we all know why. ”

The Texas Supreme Court’s decision to overturn a lower court’s earlier-in-the-night ruling that had given voters in Dallas County until 9:00 p.m. to cast their ballots and ordered tabulators to ignore ballots received after 7:00 p.m.

“I can tell you right now that people have been disenfranchised,” Crockett told supporters at a campaign event Tuesday evening as the courts played out. “In my opinion, we will not know the results of the general election tonight.”

Voters were thrown into confusion Tuesday evening amid the decision of some counties – including Dallas – to split precincts where voters can cast ballots for the Republican and Democratic primaries.

Under Texas law, party leaders can run their primaries together, in the same places and with the same equipment. In Tuesday’s primaries, states such as Houston decided to forego joint primaries to protect themselves from cross-voting, fearing that holding Republican and Democratic primaries in the same precincts could result in attrition.

Meanwhile, voters in Texas can participate in any primary without party registration because it hosts open primaries.
