The body of a 21-year-old man was reportedly found hanging from a tree in Georgia Park.
According to 11Alive, on Wednesday, February 18, authorities received a call “about a dead person in a wooded area” at Fair Oaks Park in Cobb County, Georgia. On Friday, February 20, Kyle Bassinga’s family confirmed that it was his body that had been found.
According to the report, witnesses said Bassinga entered a wooded area of the park around 4:30 pm on Valentine’s Day. Furthermore, his family reported him missing on February 15.
“At the moment, online speculation is our biggest concern. We are focused on burying our son and we are happy to have found him,” Bassinga’s family reportedly told the media last week amid speculation about his death.

On Monday, February 23, 11Alive reported that Bassinga’s killing has been officially ruled a suicide. Atlanta News First adds that Cobb County Sheriff Dan Ferrell asserted that “substantial evidence” has been gathered. This, it is reported, includes “video evidence, phone evidence, and witness interviews that [show] there is no indication of foul play.”
Cobb County Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Lisa Cupid also spoke, addressing social media concerns about a case similar to Jim Crow-era lynchings.
“This violent manner has caused many to think of the days of slavery and Jim Crow, and this type of violence shown to African Americans, especially men, during that period of history has caused many to react to what happened with great disbelief… I hear it, I understand it, and we sympathize with that here in this region,” he reportedly explained.We want to see the truth of this matter first from the family, who deserve it… as they are facing their grief at this time, but it is also important that our society knows the truth.”
Atlanta News First added that, as of Monday, police were waiting to sit down with the Bassinga family to share what they found.
“Once that meeting takes place, we will discuss releasing more information to the public and putting that context into what happened, and I believe that will answer the questions that people have been asking,” Cobb County Sheriff Dan Ferrell is reported to have said.
Fox 5 Atlanta reports that on Tuesday, February 24, a vigil was held to honor Kyle Bassinga. In addition, a GoFundMe was launched to “honor his memory and guide him to a peaceful rest.” As of Friday, February 26, the campaign has raised more than $10,000 of its $20,000 goal.
