Martin Short’s Daughter Had ‘Mentally Ill’ Dog Before Death

Martin Shortdaughter of, Katherine Hartley Shorthe reportedly had a service dog that helped him manage his “mental illness” before his sudden death at the age of 42.
Katherine reportedly shared a photo and bio of her dog Joni, named after singer Joni Mitchell, on her now-deleted website, according to Page Six.
“Joni is my amazing dog, who has been helping me with my mental illness for the last 5 years,” Katherine reportedly wrote on the site, in store. “Joni is often with me in the office, curled up in his bed.”
Katherine reportedly called her pet a “perfect sweetheart” who “loves people,” adding that people shouldn’t be “surprised if he greets you with a smile, a wagging tail … and maybe a kiss.”

The source noted that Katherine is also involved with the charity Bring Change 2 Mind, a nonprofit dedicated to creating “a world where mental illness is met with understanding and care—don’t judge,” according to the organization’s website.
Us Weekly has reached out to Martin’s attorney for comment.
Katherine’s family confirmed her death on Tuesday, February 24. “It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and requests privacy at this time,” said Martin’s spokesperson. Us in the statement. “Katherine was loved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought to the world.”
No other details were provided, but the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed it Us that “officers responded to a radio call of a possible suicide attempt in the 2800 block of Westshire Drive” on Monday, February 23, at 6:43 pm PT.
When authorities arrived, “Officers found a deceased female at the scene,” the LAPD said. The official cause of Katherine’s death has not been released.
Only a few of Katherine’s neighbors were told Us on Tuesday, “Incredibly sad,” to hear of Katherine’s death.
A next-door neighbor remembered Katherine as “a neighbor and a great farmer,” according to an eyewitness Us it seemed to be supported by a beautiful orange tree in front of his house.
“She was very nice but this place is quiet and to be honest, we don’t see many neighbors who come out often,” said a neighbor two doors down from Katherine, noting that she didn’t throw parties, wasn’t loud and kept to herself.
A third resident told it Us they didn’t see much of Katherine, but she seemed friendly. A neighbor remembers Katherine always sitting on her porch and waving, “Hello.”
Katherine is survived by her father, Martin, 75, and two brothers, Oliver,39, and Henry36.
