Nick Reiner pleaded guilty to two counts of murder after being accused of stabbing his parents to death, Rob Reiner again Michele Singer Reinerlate last year, but a legal expert said his defense team will have an uphill battle if the case goes to trial.
“The fact that Nick had an argument with the victims the day before the murder Conan O’BrienA Christmas party is fatal to any real defense in a lawsuit,” a former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmanipresident of Los Angeles-based West Coast Trial Lawyers, he said Us Weekly only after the defendant appeared in court on Monday, February 23.
Nick, 32, and his late father, 78, reportedly got into a verbal argument at a star-studded party the night before the director and his wife, 70, were killed on the afternoon of Sunday, December 14, according to TMZ. The couple’s bodies were found in their master bedroom 12 hours later.
Prosecutors believe Nick stabbed his parents to death in their Los Angeles home before fleeing their home.
On Monday, Nick pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and was denied bail, waiving his right to a speedy trial. He wore a brown jumpsuit and shaved his head with facial hair to appear in court, while sitting behind glass. If convicted, he could face the death penalty or life in prison without parole.

Eric Charbonneau/Getty Images for NetflixRahmani said the alleged argument between Nick and his parents just hours before the crime was “evidence of premeditation, which is what you need for first-degree murder under special circumstances under California law.”
“If you have a fight with someone and you come back with a weapon, that is self-organization,” added Rahmani. “That’s what happened with [2019] Nipsey Hussle murder case in Los Angeles.”
Rahmani was talking about how the prosecutors handled the Nipsey Hussle crime case and proved that the accused was guilty. Eric Holder Jr. made a deliberate choice between his initial altercation with Hussle and shooting the rapper outside his Marathon Clothing store in South Central Los Angeles. (Holder Jr. was convicted of first-degree murder in July 2022 and later sentenced to 60 years to life in state prison.)

The former prosecutor said that Nick’s defense team may have several strategies that could go ahead, all of which could lead to problems.
“If you analyze your defense, you are probably not guilty by reason of insanity. Because of that, you should be able to know right from wrong. If you know enough to argue with your parents at a Christmas party, you are not crazy,” Rahmani explained to Us.
“He can argue self-defense, but his parents are much older than him and it’s very difficult to prove self-defense unless they have some kind of weapon,” added Rahmani, noting that Nick’s legal team may take the approach of saying it was a case of suicide.
However, Rahmani said “if you fight the day before and come back the next day with a knife, that’s a lot of time to defend yourself against murder.”
Nick will currently remain in jail without bail.
