But his old, destructive habits threaten to undo all the progress he’s made, especially when an old friend, Simon (Harris Dickinson), returns to his life. Just because there’s a three-day holiday weekend due to President’s Day doesn’t mean we’ll be short on new streaming content this week. In fact, the second week of February brings new shows and movies that hit platforms like Netflix, Hulu and Prime Video. This week there is a great program for the first broadcast […]

Directed by Dickinson, The Urchin a hot life drama that doesn’t hold back in its depiction of a man living in poverty. As much a victim of his addiction as he is of a broken system, Mike tries to be better than he is now, but the problems seem insurmountable for him. While I wouldn’t describe The Urchin as fun to watch, it’s always entertaining, especially when it shows Mike’s rising and falling fortunes. The climax of the film is surreal, leaving you to interpret what happened to Mike. The Urchin is Dickinson’s first as a director, and it’s good enough to make you want him to make another movie sooner rather than later.

The Urchin is streaming on Hulu.

‘The Astronaut’ (2025)

Sam Walker (Kate Mara) is an astronaut who has just survived a tragic accident on the space station. Now that he has returned to Earth, he has been isolated in a small house where he is being secretly worshiped by the government. After several strange occurrences, Sam believes that there is a strange creature on the premises. If he is right, what is it and does it have anything to do with what happened to him in space? And if not, are you slowly going crazy from being separated from friends and family?

Astronaut is an under-the-radar sci-fi thriller that starts with an interesting premise and finds a stranger from there. The film cleverly introduces a few herrings to keep you guessing where it’s going without being too cheap or gimmicky. The final act of the film is full of sci-fi, when Sam reveals a shocking secret that makes him reevaluate his entire life. What that secret is is left for you to discover, but trust me — you won’t be disappointed.

One of the biggest hits of 1992, Sister Act it’s a ’90s comedy with an ever-better Goldberg and a stellar cast full of veteran actors living it up — and telling a dirty joke or two. The movie takes the classic “out of the water” concept and breathes life into it, with often hilarious results. It’s amazing to see Deloris trying to fit in with the other sisters, who are as rigid and boring as she begins to believe. The film includes several haunting song sequences, with Deloris leading her sisters in singing ’60s classics like “I’ll Follow Him” with a spiritual bent. The film featured an unsatisfying sequence, Sister Act 2: Back to the Habitand a successful adaptation of a Broadway musical.

Sister Act is streaming on Hulu.
