Thames Valley Police confirmed to the BBC earlier this month that they were looking into allegations that Andrew had shared confidential information with a deceased sex trafficker. Jeffrey Epstein while serving as UK trade ambassador from 2001 to 2011.
Authorities also revealed earlier this month that they were investigating a separate claim that Epstein trafficked a woman to the UK for allegedly sleeping with Andrew in 2010.
Andrew’s reported liaison with Epstein has made headlines for years. In 2019, Virginia Giuffre she alleges that she had multiple sexual encounters with Andrew in 2001 when he was young.
Giuffre – who died by suicide aged 41 in April 2025 – accused Andrew of sexual assault in 2021. They settled out of court the following year. Giuffre shared details of his alleged encounter with Andrew and Epstein in his memoir, No Girlwhich was released posthumously in October 2025. Andrew has continued to deny all the allegations against him.
After the memoir was released, Charles announced his decision to formally strip Andrew of his royal titles.
“Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. His tenancy at the Royal Lodge has, until now, provided him with legal protection to continue his stay,” a statement from Buckingham Palace said. “A formal notice of termination of the lease has been issued and he will be moving to a private residence. This accusation seems necessary, although he continues to deny the allegations against him.”
The statement concluded, “Their officials wish to make it clear that their thoughts and deepest sympathies have been, and will remain, with victims and survivors of any form of abuse.”
