Andy Cruz Faces IBF Eliminator vs Albert Bell

The IBF has officially invited Cruz and undefeated contender Albert Bell to negotiate a final decision to determine the next challenger for Raymond Muratalla’s lightweight belt. Bell quickly accepted. Cruz’s team has expressed interest, but the decision is a real risk because Bell’s profile threatens to rematch the fight that Cruz lost in January.

Albert Bell’s size presents an immediate problem for Cruz

Bell stands at 6’0″, unusually tall for the 135-pound class, with the reach and frame to control distance against smaller opponents. Cruz faced this problem against Muratalla on January 24, when he lost a 12-round majority decision in his first title attempt. Cruz had clear success when he chose to engage, often landing clean punches and disrupting Muratalla’s offense.

The problem was his reluctance to support that approach. He yielded repeatedly, moved instead of holding position, and allowed Muratalla to advance unchallenged. Judges tend to favor a fighter who applies pressure, even when punches miss, and Muratalla’s forward movement creates the visual control needed to secure a decision.

Bell has the size to force Cruz into that same retreat pattern. Tall lightweights can set up range and make opponents work harder to get into striking range. Cruz’s hesitation becomes costly against opponents who can take up space and keep him reacting rather than initiating. Bell doesn’t need a lot of power to cause problems. His size alone could limit Cruz’s offense if Cruz fails to change his approach.

Cruz, 30, entered the Muratalla fight as a mandatory challenger and left with his first career loss. The 2020 Olympic gold medalist remains one of the most technically gifted fighters, but his performance revealed the structural limitations of the lightweight. Promoter Eddie Hearn openly talked about the possibility of Cruz dropping down to 130 pounds after the loss, noting the size difference he faced. Muratalla, undefeated in 24 fights with 17 knockouts, remains at lightweight and has been granted voluntary defense while the IBF finalizes its next mandatory bout.

Bell, undefeated in 28 fights with nine knockouts, spent years waiting for an opportunity at junior lightweight before moving up in search of a better place. His immediate acceptance of the breaker shows his willingness to spend money on the opening. The IBF letter gives both parties until Thursday to continue negotiations.

The eliminator forces Cruz to make a clear decision earlier than expected. Acceptance keeps him on track for the title but puts him in front of another powerful opponent who can recreate the same tactical problems. Refusal could indicate a move to junior lightweight or a realignment of his career path.

Cruz’s ability has never been in question, but at lightweight, ability alone has not been enough to control bigger fighters who refuse to put down. This finisher will show that he has learned from Muratalla even if the division remains physically dependent on him.
