Police are releasing new information about the murder of surfer Kurt Van Dyke

Authorities in Costa Rica have released important information about the alleged murder of Kurt Van Dyke, a California native from a famous surfing family.
Van Dyke was arrested by at least two people after his weekend break-in, the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) told the California Post. The suspects, who were armed with guns, forced the diver and his girlfriend into the bedroom for a few minutes while they stole valuables from the house.
“It appears they killed the man and fled. The woman was not seriously injured; however, the man died at the scene,” officials told the California Post.
It was about 10:50 in the morning in the sector of Cahuita in Talamanca, in the province of Limón, when the authorities responded to the report on FEN 114 of the death of a man on Saturday.
“The deceased was identified as Van Dyke, 66, and an American citizen,” officials said.
Authorities said his initial cause of death appeared to be asphyxiation, and he suffered multiple stab wounds, authorities added. The case is still under investigation.
The body has been sent to the Forensic Morgue, where the cause and manner of death will be determined. According to the deceased’s brother, the American embassy is investigating the preparations for the return of the remains.
Authorities say Van Dyke’s body was found under his bed, covered in a sheet, with a knife placed near his head. His 31-year-old girlfriend was reportedly zip-tied and beaten before the armed robbers made off with valuables, including the couple’s car.
His brother, Peter Van Dyke, previously told The Post that he suspects there is more to the killing than first reported, adding that he spoke to his younger brother a few days ago and said he was “in good spirits.”
Although he knew about the girl, he did not know anything about her and warned that there are people who “don’t like” him in the area.
“There are people who like him and there are people who don’t like him.
Kurt had many business partners in the region after moving to Costa Rica in the mid-1980s, according to his brother.
