Dylan Larkin, Detroit Red Wings, and Minnesota Wild

How the Detroit Red Wings and Dylan Larkin came to a trade offer

Anthony Di Marco of the Daily Faceoff was on TSN Radio in Montreal and was asked about Dylan Larkin asking out of Detroit. Looking to go to three teams, how can a team like the Minnesota Wild pull off this type of trade?

Host: “We’re talking to Anthony Di Marco of the Daily Faceoff. Anthony, let’s move on to some on-ice news here in the NHL. Dylan Larkin, news broke last week that he requested a trade to Detroit. Most recently, he’s willing to go to three teams: Florida, Vegas, or Minnesota.”

Anthony Di Marco: “Oh, what do you know? When that report came, I didn’t see that, but I mean low-hanging fruit, right? You get the last two Stanley Cup Champions in Florida and Vegas, both in tax-free states, and in Minnesota, where we know you have a good relationship with General Manager Bill Guerin.

Key Golden Knights and Hurricanes Players Who Shaped This Year’s Stanley Cup Finals

Larkin obviously played a key role on the Olympic gold medal team as a third-line center, and no team needs a top-tier center more than the Minnesota Wild. And this is a complete indictment of Steve Yzerman as a general manager. I have not been impressed with his work, since the beginning of last season, 2024.

And I mean, you could have traded Dylan Larkin a few years ago at the trade deadline, before signing him to an eight-year extension. You’re keeping him because, it seems like it’s time to push the pedal to the metal and start speeding things up. It hasn’t happened in Detroit, it’s only gotten worse since then, and now he’s completely locked out and loaded with a full no-trade clause.

So, I mean, this is what happens when actions have consequences. In this case, inactivity has consequences for Steve Yzerman, and because you were reluctant, now you have a player who has all the cards in his hand.”

Are Larkin and Minnesota eligible and potential players?

In the follow-up, Di Marco was asked about possible trade chips in Larkin’s deal to Minnesota and whether Jesper Wallstedt could be involved.

Host: “Do you see a potential contract here with (Jesper) Wallstedt?”

NHL Rumors: Leafs, Canucks, Canadiens, and Wild

Di Marco: “I mean, yeah, it’s the best piece that Minnesota has. But here’s the thing, guys, they’re loaded, the Red Wings, I mean, they don’t have scoring prospects, Trey Augustine, Sebastian Cossa, two top guys, they’re top prospects in the NHL. He’s on a guaranteed contract for a good amount of money, he can go in right away.

I don’t believe they’re going to bring Cam Talbot back, so you have a (John) Gibson-Wallstedt tandem for one season, but what do you do with Cossa or Augustine? So I think if you bring in Wallstedt and (Charlie)Stramel and (Danila) Yurov, maybe also, in a deal, you’ll try to trade Cosa and or Augustine for help up front.

Because here’s the thing, guys, like no blue chip prospects are going to come up the pipeline as far as the Detroit Red Wings go. They didn’t go particularly deep in the middle. After Dylan Larkin, you have Andrew Copp and then JT Compher, so they’re going to have to be creative here.

If you bring in Wallstedt as the biggest piece from Minnesota, you’ll have to turn these other goal prospects into some assets up front. “

NHLRumors.com Note: The situation between Dylan Larkin and GM Steve Yzerman has reached a fever pitch. It’s no surprise that he wants to go out and play with his teammates from Team USA, who won the gold medal. Although everyone may be mad at Larkin, this is the same situation in Winnipeg due to the inability of the GM, this time, in Detroit, Steve Yzerman, to show and the team has made significant progress. It sounds like the team is going Buffalo-style Rebuild 2.0 and starting over.

NHL Rumors: Pittsburgh Penguins, and Trade Talks Heat Up

The issue for all of these teams is cap space, more on that in another article, but in the case of Minnesota, without Filip Gustavsson to start the year, why do they move Jesper Wallstedt? Not to mention that Detroit doesn’t need a cornerback in the deal.
