‘Summer House’ Reunion: What is BPD?

Ciara Miller wasn’t the only one to bare her soul in the first half of the show Summer House Season 10 reunion. KJ Dillard, who joined the show this season as West Wilson’s friend, opened up about his mental health struggles, and the recent diagnosis that helped him on his road to recovery.

Dillard—who is currently dating her co-star, Dara Levitan—revealed late in the episode that she was hospitalized for a week last fall for self-harm, before spending “a few months” recovering.

“I was focusing on myself. I needed that because I think all my life, I distracted myself and ran away from my problems instead of facing them head on,” he said. “But now I’m better. I got treatment. And I’m on medication. I was diagnosed with BPD in the hospital. I’m thankful that I’m here, alive, because I wouldn’t be here.”

Dillard said she is “thankful” for the support of her actress friends, Miller and Mia Calabrese, who were with her “almost every day” while she was in the hospital. He went on to say, “I’m very grateful that the audience accepts that because it’s my truth and I won’t be honest about what I’m going through, especially if it can help others.”

Dillard, who has been open about her anxiety and mental health issues on the show, revealed that she was diagnosed with BPD last fall. If you’re not sure what that means, we’ve got you covered. Read on for everything you need to know about borderline personality disorder.

What is BPD?

BPD is an acronym for borderline personality disorder, according to the Mayo Clinic, “a mental health condition that affects how people feel about themselves and others, making it difficult to function in everyday life.” At its onset, symptoms include intense fear of abandonment, unstable relationship patterns, uncontrollable behavior, threats of self-harm and suicidal thoughts, mood swings, and periods of stress-related anxiety. As Dillard said, BPD can be treated with therapy and, in some cases, medication.

Does KJ Dillard have BPD?

As mentioned before, Summer House star KJ Dillard was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder when he was hospitalized last fall.

In a since-deleted Instagram post from November 2025, Dillard talked about her “life-changing” illness, which came after more than a decade of suffering from “attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety and depression.”

“For years, my mental health has been a thorn in my side. It’s a topic I often write about in my music, but rarely share online,” he wrote in the post. “On social media, it’s easy for me to hide behind a screen, post my highlights and pretend that everything is fine when in fact everything is not fine. It’s okay to be wrong. That’s what society does for you. This is not a cry for help, or something like that, but more than a post ‘I’m human’. This is my dedication. It’s time to release anyone for a while. It hurts, I live with you.” …
