The US-Iran Standing War: Letters

Issue: The United States ends its war with Iran, despite Iran’s failure to give up its enriched uranium.

As a staunch supporter of President Trump, it pains me to see him played by the Iranians (“Nuke’s line in the sand,” May 22).

At the start of the ceasefire, Trump made it clear that his demand for “no nukes” was non-negotiable. Yet here we are, six weeks later, and the Iranians are refusing to give up their enriched uranium.

If we had acted after the failure of the two-week ceasefire, the mullahs would have been dead or living in Moscow, the oil on Kharg Island would have been controlled by America and the Strait of Hormuz would have been opened to the free flow of oil.

Trump’s follow-up book to the “Art of the Deal” might be called “How I Screwed the Pooch.”

Trump knows he will never get the deal and terms he needs.

Right now, he and his team must have a plan to finally free the people of Iran and the rest of the world from this terrorist regime. He must use it immediately. Anything less and you risk falling into line after the presidential failures of Barack Obama and Joe Biden. This is Trump’s moment of truth.

Since Trump has told the Iranians that they need to make a deal or face elimination, Iran has stalled and stalled.

My message to Trump is this: If you’re going to talk the talk, walk the walk. Stop barking at the moon. We have to finish this thing so that I can pay for other needs besides electricity.

As Michael Goodwin points out in his column (“Trump’s firm ‘no nukes’ decision,” May 20), Iran now has the ability to reach other major European cities, including London and Paris.

However, knowing that, those who call themselves allies do not have the courage to stand up and get involved. Can these complaints even be trusted to live up to Article 5 of the NATO treaty?

Their actions, or lack thereof, leave doubts in the minds of reasonable people.

Trump will be known as a moderate president, despite the cartoons the media and the left portray him as. You are the steady hand we need in these uncertain times.

The last thing Trump can do is appease or compromise on nukes – because the consequences are too great. By any means, he will destroy Iran to the bitter end.

Case in point: Two teenagers killed three people and themselves at a San Diego mosque.

The attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego is a painful reminder that hatred against religious communities remains a real and dangerous problem (“Massacre at the Mosque,” May 19).

Tragedies like these create fear among worshipers whose sole purpose is to seek spiritual comfort and strengthen their relationship with God. No one should feel unsafe when praying in a mosque, church, synagogue or temple.

At a time when public discourse is increasingly divided, we need greater compassion, understanding and solidarity between communities.

Hatred may grab the headlines, but it is mutual respect that keeps societies peaceful.

In the wake of the terrorist killings of three people at the San Diego Islamic Center, one would expect leaders from both parties to be quick to condemn, and express support for, that community. Sadly, the world has fallen silent.

The unwillingness of our leaders to condemn religious hatred and violence will inevitably create more of it.
