NHL Rumors: Edmonton Oilers and Tampa Bay Lightning

Dennis Bernstein: “You think they’re changing coaches in Edmonton.”

Ryan Paton: “I would reach for that because he’s going into the first year of a new contract.”

Dave Pagnotta: “There is, and I don’t think Daryl Katz is wrong. I think the owner is worried about how things went this season. Even though we knew what we were doing, and I know we talked about this on the show all season, that we expected some kind of drop from the Oilers. I don’t think we all expected the first round but…”

Bernstein: “I’m waiting for Connor McDavid to speak. To call the average of his team.”

Pagnotta: “Right? There’s going to be a lot of changes for the Oilers now. I think they’re considering a coaching change. I believe there’s going to be more changes to this team in the next two months. They’re talking about it. They’re thinking about it. They’re assessing their situation. Then they’re going to have to make some roster decisions.

Will they go after Jordan Binington? Will they go after Filip Gustavsson, who is completely unmoved? Will they go after Connor Hellebuyck, who is completely unmoved? I don’t think the (Winnipeg) Jets would want to do that to Edmonton. But aside from that, they reached the blue line. Darnell Nurse’s name is there and was before the deadline. There will be more this offseason. They have to get a quality midfielder, which seems to be the best option.”

NHL Rumors: What will happen to Edmonton Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch?

Paton: “Go on, and that’s a long list, Dave.”

Bernstein: “There are holes in the team. There are a lot of holes in the team.”

Pagnotta: “Third-line center. Are they going to keep (Jason) Dickinson or bring in somebody else? They have to get to the fourth line. Michael McCarron would be good for that. Like, I mean, he’s in Minny (Minnesota) right now, but that caliber of player is going to work for the Oilers’ fourth line. There’s a lot of work to be done there.”

NHLRumors.com Note: The Edmonton Oilers have a lot of work to do this offseason. GM Stan Bowman is on the clock with Connor McDavid. He must right the wrongs of the past. And it’s not just Bowman; it was former management and CEO Jeff Jackson as well. This list is poorly constructed.

There are plenty of holes to fill, and Bowman hopes to keep Jason Dickinson and Connor Murphy. He better think about what he sacrificed for them. However, until the Oilers start playing the team’s defense, they will be strong. It doesn’t matter who is the goalkeeper or the coach. Players must buy into whatever program they are playing.
