Bullies at a southern California university will have private security at night after dealing with homeless harassment that left young women feeling unsafe, according to a report.
The UCLA Panhellenic Association, which describes itself as the largest women’s organization at the school, hired private security guards to monitor the university’s campus, which covers several blocks on Hilgard Avenue of the suburban Los Angeles campus, according to the California Post.
Young women have reported aggressive behavior from homeless people who regularly come up to them and make obscene comments, and have criticized campus police for not responding to their problems.

“We had a meeting with UCPD a few weeks ago and it didn’t go well,” 20-year-old student Ani Hovanesian told The Post. “It seemed like they weren’t aware of the issue and they weren’t standing up. They were throwing things at us like ‘why don’t you call 911 or report any of this’ and it’s like ummm, we’re here and that’s why we’re here.”

Another student, Catherine Nichley, 20, said she did not feel “completely safe.”
“The irony is that it’s usually the same three homeless men who hang out on this list, usually between the ages of 40 and 60, who often live at the bus stop,” he told The Post.
He described one man, called “The Hilgard Screamer,” who would scream at all hours of the day and night.

“These men are staring at your soul,” Nichley told the outlet. “They said dirty things, and I actually said, ‘What are you looking at?’ because it feels so good.”
Another member of the order said that he rarely sees campus police in the area, and that he feels safe when he walks near the fraternity houses, where there are many police officers. He also added that sometimes, homeless people sleep on the grass of the houses.
The University of California Police Department said it patrols the area regularly.

“UCPD takes seriously the concerns expressed by students about harassment and unsavory behavior near Hilgard Avenue. Students should feel safe where they live, study and walk around campus, and we are listening carefully,” the department told Fox News Digital.
“UCPD regularly monitors and monitors the area, including increased evening populations, and continues to work with campus partners, student leaders and stakeholders to address concerns and connect students with support,” the department said.
