“I was worried when Carra wanted to leave and what we were going to do without her,” Preston, 58, said. Us Weekly only in february. “But what ended up happening was we brought in Lindsay Mendez, B, Ethan Slater and we brought in all these great actors.”

The shakeup allowed the show’s writers to be creative.

“[It brought] change, growth, conflict, loss and all those things enrich any character. Our show for the first few seasons was also a romance where these two women were very connected and they were very different but they found this amazing harmony working together,” Preston Us said. “That doesn’t go away. So longing for that – his best friend – and being with him created a scene work that’s really fun and deep and emotional. “

The actress continued: “When Kaya comes back, we see that reunion. We see them go back to where they were, but they’ve both experienced different things that they can put into their friendship. It’s been fun, and the writers have done such a good job of not trying to fill Kaya’s shoes because you can’t, but instead bringing in sidekicks that are different than those people with El and those people with Kaya. All of those things don’t do anything but make it a richer draw for the cast and hopefully the audience.”

A new episode, however, revealed that Kaya may be back for good.

Elizabeth airs on CBS Thursdays at 9 pm ET. New episodes air the next day on Paramount+.
