Goldie Hawn says her relationship with Kurt Russell still feels comfortable after 43 years together
After forty years together, Goldie Hawn appreciates the “freedom” she still has in her relationship with Kurt Russell.
The legendary actress, who is preparing to release her first children’s book, “The After-School Kindness Crew: Pooch on the Loose” with her partner Lin Oliver on May 5, opened up about this new chapter in life and explained how her bond with Russell continues to grow stronger after 43 years together.
“My purpose in life is to be happy. My purpose in life is to be an example to my children and my family,” Hawn, who turned 80 in November, told People.
As you get older, things can become more difficult. Your attitude is important. The way you look at life is important, the way you value the moments in your life is important, because it feeds your brain. So, I say, ‘Right now, everything is amazing.’
Including his relationship with Russell.
He explained that he still feels “free” with her, saying, “When I say freedom, I mean freedom.” I don’t feel tied down,” Hawn said, adding that she and Russell “would be a good fit.”
“We don’t always agree on things, which is good, we’re both spontaneous. [Our relationship] you have been fed a lot of beauty, a lot of good life together.”
Hawn has two children, Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson, from her previous marriage to Bill Hudson, while Russell shares a son Boston Russell with his ex-wife Season Hubley. Hawn and Russell, who started dating in 1983, later welcomed a son, Wyatt Russell.
In 2024, during an appearance on SiriusXM’s “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend,” the Academy Award-winning actor talked about his mutual love for Russell and their family and explained why it’s the “glue that sticks” in their relationship.
“We don’t agree with everything,” Hawn said in the clip he shared with PEOPLE. “His politics is different from mine, you know, there are all these things that can divide you, but one thing we have, the greatest thing in God’s world, is our family.
“That’s where we thrive and where we have an incredible amount of happiness and focus on that.”
Despite their differences, Hawn attributed the attraction to “Russell’s focus on children.”
“He’s a family man,” Hawn said. “I can’t explain it, but he was the one who stood up for me, it wasn’t because he was lovely and beautiful and all those things you get in return, it was because he equated my dedication to the children to being No.
Their daughter, Kate Hudson, had similar feelings.
“They’ve been together for 40-plus years. They’re the core of our family,” Hudson told SiriusXM’s “The Howard Stern Show” in 2024.
“I think on the outside it looks a certain way, but on the inside, our family is just nuts, in the best way. Everyone is very different, but everyone wants to enjoy their life. There is a lot of joie de vivre.
“Even, like a debate or when people are upset, it’s like we have this life force in our family, and it’s great.”
With the release of his new book, Hawn welcomes this upcoming season in life.
“I think, in the end, every life has to have its stages… Doing the same thing over and over again for the rest of your life is not interesting to me,” Hawn told People.
“And I decided at about age 55 or something … ‘What are you going to do with the next part of your life?’ And I knew I had a lot to learn and do.”
