Sharpton calls Kamala Harris a ‘powerful force in the Black community’

MS NOW host Al Sharpton feels former Vice President Kamala Harris has been “overlooked” to run for president in 2028, but will make sure the Black community appreciates her efforts at her upcoming convention.
Sharpton is gearing up for next week’s National Action Network’s 35th Anniversary Convention, an event in New York City that Politico Playbook says will bring together a “who’s who” of Black political powerhouses, potential 2028 Democrats vying for Black voters, and top lobbyists.
Harris is expected to attend, along with other potential 2028 candidates such as Gov. Pennsylvania Josh Shapiro, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Sharpton aimed to remind attendees that Harris remains a popular figure among potential black voters, even after the party is still reeling from her loss to President Donald Trump in 2024.

“I will not ignore that you are a powerful force in the Black community,” Sharpton told Politico.
“I don’t know if he’s going to try to run again, but I think he deserves credit for everything he’s done, and the fact that he got more votes than any president in American history, except for Trump,” Sharpton continued. “I think he is being overlooked, and we will talk about that in our meeting.”
Sharpton seemed to forget that former President Joe Biden still holds the official record for most votes by a candidate in 2020, when he won 81.2 million.
Harris also plans to attend state party fundraisers in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia in the coming weeks, and will speak at an Arkansas Democratic Party event later this month, according to Politico.

The publication suggested that Harris’ “southern swing” is a sure sign that he is ready for a 2028 comeback bid,” and a sign that other candidates need to improve their standing among black voters.
“The fact that you have multiple candidates who have experience and won the black vote in their states makes this very competitive… nobody is going to take the black vote lightly,” Sharpton told Politico.
Podcast host Joy Reid, who was Sharpton’s colleague when MS NOW was on MSNBC, recently said that Harris should not run for president again, saying that the US will never elect a woman to the office of president.
“I hope he doesn’t run again. I don’t think he should,” Reid said on the “One54” podcast.

“I think there are good ways he can work,” Reid added. “I don’t think the United States will choose a woman in my lifetime.”
Harris suggested he may run for president again during an interview in February.
