Tiger Woods rejects US Ryder Cup captaincy: ‘We support his decision’

In the wake of Tiger Woods’ car accident, the 15-time major champion will not be the US captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup.
The PGA of America announced the news in a statement on Wednesday, saying that Woods “shared with us that he will not serve” as captain of the American team next year.
The decision ends months of speculation that Tiger will finally take over the reins of the US Ryder Cup team. It also leaves the PGA of America and the American team without a captain with just 18 months to go until the 2027 event in Ireland.
PGA: Tiger has stepped down as Ryder Cup captain in 2027
Shortly after the European team completed its second straight Ryder Cup victory over the American team at Bethpage Black, one thing was clear, albeit unofficial.
If Tiger Woods wanted to captain America at the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor, the job was his. Given his busy schedule and recovery from surgery, it was never a foregone conclusion that Woods would take the job.
But as the event drew near, a decision was expected soon. We will never know what Woods intended to do.
On Friday, March 27, Woods was involved in a car accident near his home in Jupiter, Fla., and was arrested and charged with DUI. Woods later denied the charges.

Then on March 31, Woods announced that he would be “retiring” from golf and public life to “seek treatment and focus on my life.”
At the time, the Ryder Cup captaincy question was up in the air, but the PGA of America gave us an answer on Wednesday.
In a statement released on social media, the PGA of America confirmed that Woods has decided not to take the job of captaining the US Ryder Cup.
“Tiger has shared with us that he will not serve as Captain of the 2027 US Ryder Cup Team and we support his decision,” the statement read.
“The PGA of America stands in full support of Tiger Woods as he steps out to focus on his health and well-being. During this time, we keep Tiger in our thoughts and prayers, and we sincerely hope for his strength, comfort, and recovery. Tiger means a lot to our Association and to the game of golf.”
The PGA also praised Woods for “prioritizing his long-term health” and said it “greatly respects the courage it takes to make a personal decision.”
A recent collision, this episode is very similar to the process the PGA went through to select the captain of the 2025 US Ryder Cup. Woods was the top candidate for the job last year.

But in the end, Woods informed the PGA that he would not accept the 2025 captaincy. Keegan Bradley took his place.
In a statement read during a press conference announcing Bradley’s captaincy, Woods said, “For my new job [PGA] The commitment of the tour and the time involved I felt I would not be able to devote the time to Team USA and the players needed as captain.”
He added, “That doesn’t mean I won’t want to captain the team in the future. If/when I see the time is right, I’ll put my hat in the ring for this committee to make a decision.”
Now we’ll have to wait another two years to find out if the 2029 Ryder Cup is Woods’ last captaincy.
But now there is a more pressing question. With Tiger gone, who will captain the 2027 US Ryder Cup? The captain’s crisis comes at a time when the American people are looking for strong leadership. Fresh off an embarrassing defeat on US soil, the team’s second straight Ryder Cup loss, the US needs a win. But they need a captain first.
The European team has no such problem. Luke Donald has been announced as the European captain. He is working hard preparing to bring his team a third victory in 2027.
