Browns coach Todd Monken misses NFL coaching staff photo over haircut merger

Todd Monken was looking forward to his first photo day as head coach of the Cleveland Browns, when all 32 coaches are scheduled to appear in Phoenix for the NFL’s annual league meeting this week.

However, Monken didn’t make it to the team photo, and Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com discovered that the haircut was the reason.

Monken stopped by for a haircut specifically for the photo on Monday, and he believes he timed the situation well, noting in his diary that the photo was scheduled for Pacific Daylight Time in Phoenix.

But when Monken ran into Jacksonville Jaguars coach Liam Coen, he learned the photo had been taken.

It wasn’t that Monken was late. Instead, the coaches’ meeting, which he skipped, left early, and they decided to take a picture with all the coaches together. Well, not all coaches.

Monken wasn’t the only coach out of the picture. Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay was also absent from the photo.

While Monken may have missed the snap, he did not miss sharing his thoughts on his quarterback depth chart heading into his first season on the job in Cleveland.

All eyes are on Monken and his staff selecting the Browns’ eventual starter, whether it’s veteran Deshaun Watson, who could be on his way back in 2026; Shedeur Sanders; or Dillon Gabriel.

With the Browns’ offseason program beginning on April 7, Monken was asked if he has a QB1 in mind. Although he did not specify the order of the depth chart, he noted that the work will not be divided among the participating quarterbacks.

“I don’t expect the reps to be evenly split,” Monken said Tuesday, per the Akron Beacon Journal.

That could mean Monken has an order in mind for his quarterbacks, though he noted he wasn’t ready to say who sits atop the list. However, Monken said he and the staff will go “with what we’ve seen in the past and where the year ended last year.”

Based on the three quarterbacks, Sanders may have the upper hand. Watson was still recovering from an Achilles injury, and former coach Kevin Stefanski made Sanders start the remaining seven games of the season after Gabriel struggled before the injury.

Sanders’ got his first win against the Las Vegas Raiders.

But it’s all speculation until Brown’s show starts next week.
