Apple’s iPhone Fold Promises the ‘Most Significant Renovation’ in the Product’s History
Rumors iPhone Fold will include “the most significant overhaul” to Apple’s iconic mobile device yet, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman. In his Power On newsletter, Gurman wrote that the upcoming foldable will feature a “new design.”
Every few generations, Apple makes significant changes to its signature device. Gurman points to the iPhone 4, iPhone 6 and iPhone X as examples of phones that changed the shape and functionality of the iPhone. But according to Gurman, the iPhone Fold will be “a true form change” in the history of the iPhone.
As not confirmed iPhone Fold reports continue to come out, the first image of Apple a foldable phone it will focus. This phone is expected to be a foldable version of the book with a large internal screen for multitasking. I iOS 27 software update is rumored to allow Apple’s first foldable to open apps side-by-side, so phone owners can watch videos, play games and more at the same time on their device.
In March 2025, industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo detailed some design projections. Kuo reported that the iPhone Fold could have a 5.5-inch outer screen that opens to a 7.8-inch inner screen, a hinge made of stainless steel and titanium alloy, the same battery cells iPhone 17two rear cameras, a front-facing camera and a side button for Touch ID.
More recently, the CAD files of the target device onlineshowing an iPhone with dimensions similar to a Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold there is a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.
According to the CAD files, the back of the device lends a familiar shape to iPhone lovers: It’s a hybrid design of iPhone 17 Pro as well as iPhone Airincluding a raised rectangular platform with two cameras, a flat Apple logo that runs across the phone and rounded corners on the non-hinged side of the phone.
There is a good chance that Apple will unveil the rumored iPhone Fold in September, alongside the iPhone 18, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
An Apple representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

If the iPhone Fold happens this year, expect it to cost a pretty penny. Foldable phones are generally more expensive — the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold sell for roughly twice the price of the companies’ flagship devices.
Industry analyst Kuo predicts that Apple’s rumored foldable could cost between $2,000 and $2,500, which is in line with the price band of other book-style foldable phones currently on the market.
Managing editor Patrick Holland, who leads CNET’s mobile team, notes that when Apple finally enters the new product category, it often faces a number of complaints surrounding existing devices in that space.
“If Apple were to introduce the iPhone Fold, it would come up with a design that solves or addresses many of the major flaws that foldables currently have: software, durability, screen design and display advantages over the standard iPhone,” said Holland. “The fact that Apple already makes the iPad speaks to many of those issues. And in the last few years, we’ve seen companies make foldable phones smaller, more powerful and with better cameras.”
Holland wonders if Apple can live up to the promise of a foldable iPhone.
“The question for me is, how can Apple make a foldable phone at scale?” he said. “Even if it’s the lowest-selling iPhone, that’s still a much larger volume of foldable phones than most phone makers are selling right now.”
