The suspicious disappearance of Nancy Guthrie sparked a harrowing, 12-hour odyssey for her daughter, “Today’s” Savannah Guthrie — and it’s still not over nearly two months later.
In an emotional interview on “Dateline” with NBC co-host Hoda Kotb, she described the difficult times after learning her 84-year-old mother had disappeared from her home in Arizona, prompting a difficult cross-country trip to be with family.
The difficulty began after a normal night with her children at the home of Carson Daly, host of the show “Today,” Kotb told last week.
“We had a great, fun night together,” he said, describing the visit.

On Sunday, her husband Mike Feldman returned from golfing.
“We were saying hello, putting our things down, and the kids were running – my sister called me,” he said.
Their mother, who has back problems and other mobility problems, was not there, he said.

It was two o’clock in the afternoon in New York and noon back in Tucson. Savannah told her sister, Annie, to call 911. He already had it.

Pima County deputies were at the home – where they found evidence: blood on the front porch, back doors open, Nancy’s valuables disturbed but no sign of her whereabouts.
Annie and her husband, Tommaso “Tommy” Cioni, had already called local hospitals, hoping to be picked up by paramedics, but to no avail. Savannah called them again.

“That was at 2 p.m., but I was on a 7:30 flight to Phoenix,” Kotb said. “And then it’s a two-hour drive down to Tucson, and I’m probably at my sister’s house at 2 in the morning.”

His brother Cameron, who lives in Vermont, also flew in. After arriving late at Annie’s, Savannah remembers talking to the authorities again on the phone.
The next morning, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos held the first of three hearings he gave in the first week after Nancy’s alleged kidnapping. He hasn’t caught it since.
Just speaking, he was worried, he said. He assigned search and rescue teams to investigate the area – and also sent homicide detectives to the home.

“It affects a lot what we learn in the house,” he told reporters.
Nancy was last seen between 9:30 and 10 pm on Jan. 31, when her son-in-law dropped her off after dinner at Annie’s, according to authorities.

Nancy was taken in her pajamas, Savannah said. He was not wearing shoes. And the suspected captor or captors left valuables behind, such as his wallet, phone and Apple watch, and the medications his life depended on.

Soon the ransom demands started pouring in – although many were believed to be from fraudsters. But Savannah said at least two seemed loyal to her family, and her siblings videotaped their responses.

“How come we have to make a video talking to the kidnapper who took an 84-year-old woman at night, wearing pajamas, without shoes, without her medicine and begging?” Savannah asked Kotb.

“How can someone disappear without a trace? How? Someone knows something,” Savannah said in her Dateline interview. “Even if that’s something someone has been doing out of the ordinary for these 7, 8 weeks. Even if it’s just that. Someone knows.”
