Football giants Italy are looking to end a 12-year absence from football’s biggest competition as they take on junior Northern Ireland today in a major FIFA World Cup qualifier.

After a poor start to their qualification campaign, the Azzurri have gone on to win six in a row under new manager Gennaro Gattuso. But a 4-1 defeat at the San Siro in Norway in November ensured they would have to go through the playoffs to reach this summer’s competition. In an apparent attempt to create a more intimidating atmosphere, Gattuso has requested that the match be played at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia in Bergamo, as he seeks to prevent Italy from failing to reach the World Cup for the third time in a row.

They will face a Northern Ireland team that has been waiting a long time since their last World Cup appearance, having not won since Mexico in 1986. Coach Michael O’Neill’s lack of experience could have an impact on the game as the team tries to beat Italy for the first time since the 1958 World Cup. The challenge was made even more difficult by the absence due to injury of defender Daniel Ballard, who is having a good season for Sunderland.

The prize for tonight’s winner will be a play-off final away from home against either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina next Tuesday.

Italy face Northern Ireland in Bergamo Thursday, March. 26. Kick off is scheduled 8:45 pm CET local time. That makes it a 7:45 pm GMT start in the UK and Ireland, and a 3:45 pm ET or 12:45 pm PT start in the US and Canada. For Australian viewers, the game continues on 6:45am AEDT on friday morning.
