Alex Ovechkin Only Knows His NHL Future

The Washington Capitals don’t even know Alex Ovechkin’s decision

Dave Pagnotta of the Fourth Season joined Sirius XM NHL Network Radio with Gord Stellick and Scott Laughlin on Monday. He was asked about Alex Ovechkin and what his future holds with the Washington Capitals.

Writing for NHLRumors.com

Scott Laughlin: “Dave, if I go back to yesterday (Sunday), it’s clear that Colorado outplayed Washington. The Caps get a point to lose. They’re in the playoff race. I mean, let’s face it, it doesn’t look good for them to be in the postseason in the Eastern Conference with these teams around them that are playing well as they’re still going to get a big chunk of Alexander, Alexander Ove. Goal. That’s just the regular season and the playoffs combined. Gretzky is now 16 goals ahead of Ovi in the all-time lead in the regular season and playoffs.

NHL Rumors: Alex Ovechkin’s future in Washington is in Ovi’s hands

We’ve been talking about this a lot here lately. What is your opinion on Ovechkin? Like, do you think he’s in the last few weeks of his NHL career? Or you think maybe he’s coming back and suddenly we get a farewell tour for Anze Kopitar. When, at the end of it all, in every town he goes to, he gets a handshake and maybe a few gifts thrown his way, those kinds of things. I mean, what are the odds here? Are you considering Ovechkin here in the coming weeks and maybe months?”

Dave Pagnotta: “Yeah, I mean, look, I wish I knew. I’ve talked, I’ve almost bribed some teammates and some people in that organization. You know? Come on, tell me. Give us insight. And I mean they don’t. They won’t be surprised if he continues. But you’re given any indication that he didn’t see.

Now you can ask people to guess and guess. Some people say, Well, this could be it and others would suggest, maybe you want 1000 regular season goals, not just the entire season, so maybe it’s a few years or whatever before he meets again.

Selfishly, I would like him to play at least one more season and let everyone know that this will be his last season, so he can have that kind of farewell tour. There was uncertainty at the beginning of the year. He didn’t know.

He looks at (Evgeni) Gino Malkin, he didn’t even know at the beginning of the year. As the season went on, the way he played, he made it clear that he wanted to come back, and they will get that with the Penguins, when their season ends. It doesn’t look like it will be too difficult to get a one-year extension in his place.

NHL Rumors: Washington Capitals, and Detroit Red Wings

I have to think that if he wants to come back, the Communists will open that thing as long as he wants. And, I hope, like I said, my selfish part on the hockey side, we’d like to see him come out with a bang, do a full tour, and, respect his career, and how talented he was.

So I hope not. I haven’t been given an indication one way or the other, but again, if he’s coming out, it’s obviously in line with his goals, and I hope we get at least one more year out of it.

NHLRumors.com Note: No one knows when these pensions will arrive. Wayne Gretzky announced five days before his 1999 game. So Alex Ovechkin can call it a job at the end of the season. The Capitals play a home-and-home with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Sidney Crosby to close out the season. So it would be good for him to retire against Crosby.

Again, it all depends on how he feels and the direction of the team. But most want him to come back and retire with Crosby.
