Denmark has prepared to destroy Greenland’s airports using explosives and blood vessels amid fears it could attack the US earlier this year, according to a new report by Danish public broadcaster DR.

These measures are said to be part of an emergency plan that includes the deployment of troops to the island in January and explosives to destroy the runways, aimed at preventing American planes from landing, EuroNews said.

The measures were outlined in the Danish military’s operational order of January 13, which DR said it had reviewed.

The preparations have come as tensions have intensified over President Donald Trump’s statement that the United States must control Greenland due to national security.

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen have repeatedly dismissed Trump’s requests to buy the island.

DR said it based its report on 12 sources at the highest levels of the Danish government and military, as well as sources among Denmark’s allies in France and Germany, the BBC said.

“When Trump said all the time that he wanted to buy Greenland … we had to take every situation seriously,” an unnamed Danish military official told DR.

Denmark and several European allies are also sending troops to Greenland under NATO’s Arctic Endurance exercise.

In fact, according to sources cited by DR, the deployment was working.

The soldiers arrived armed not only with standard military equipment but also with medical supplies and explosives, the report said. France, Germany and Sweden also participated in January shipments.

Despite the preparations, the Danish authorities tried to avoid a confrontation with Washington.

Trump announced a vague “framework” agreement on Greenland with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Jan. 21, although the details are still unclear.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump said: “I don’t want to use force. I will not use force. All the United States is asking for is a place called Greenland.”

On March 17, the commander of the US Northern Command (NORTHCOM), Gen. Gregory Guillot, said, “We are working with Denmark through the Department of State to expand some of the authorities in the 1951 agreement to provide more access to different bases throughout Greenland.”

“As we look at the growing threat and the strategic importance of Greenland. But everything we do with NORTHCOM goes through Greenland and Denmark,” he added at the hearing of the House Armed Services about the US military posture and national security challenges in North and South America.
