NVIDIA CEO defends DLSS 5 as gamers call it ‘AI slop filter’

NVIDIA unveiled NVIDIA DLSS 5 on Monday, a new rendering model that uses AI to add “realistic lighting and objects” to video game graphics. The internet immediately hated it, criticizing DLSS 5 for erasing the games’ intentional art styles by adding an “AI slop filter.” Now CEO Jensen Huang has responded to DLSS 5 critics, saying they are “absolutely wrong.”

DLSS 5 was unveiled during the NVIDIA GTC keynote, accompanied by a video showing the AI tool in action. Showing clips from games like Bad Need for Residents, Hogwarts Legacyagain Starfieldvideo compared the graphics in their original state with DLSS 5 turned on, the AI gives them a more realistic look.
“DLSS 5 is the GPT era of graphics – combining hand-crafted rendering with AI-generated rendering to deliver incredible leaps in virtualization while maintaining the control artists need to deliver creativity,” Huang said in a press release.
Gamers use NVIDIA DLSS 5 as ‘AI slop filter’
Unfortunately, gamers don’t share Huang’s enthusiasm for NVIDIA’s new real-time neural model. Many have noticed that the photorealistic style DLSS 5 works on the video game in the video shown has modified the real style of the games, and completely changed the appearance of the characters to the point that some consider them unprofessional.
NVIDIA’s X post announcing DLSS 5 was quickly flooded with responses criticizing the tool, and mockery also filled the comments of a demonstration video on YouTube.
“DLSS5 makes this look like an AI generated profile picture used to scam an adult in another country,” said X user @GamersNexus, who shared the screenshot Bad Need for Residents used the character Grace with DLSS 5. “It looks like every other AI generated image is ‘human.’ There is no character or soul in it. Art loses what makes it interesting when it all looks like manufactured slop. “
“Giving games an AI filter is an insult,” wrote @kalaelizabeth. “They don’t like the characters.”
“Like what’s the point?” said @thethiny. “Artists spend hours developing a model so you can add AI Faces? I really hate this.”
“This looks horrendously bad, no one wants an AI slop filter over their games,” wrote @SynthPotato. The post has over 107,000 likes at the time of writing. NVIDIA has 66,000 posts.

NVIDIA CEO calls DLSS 5 criticism ‘completely wrong’
NVIDIA has now tried to reassure gamers and clarify exactly what DLSS 5 does, saying it won’t override the game’s art direction. Responding to the backlash during the GTC Q&A, Huang emphasized that DLSS 5’s AI-generated content doesn’t take creative control away from game developers, but instead allows them to use it as a tool. Developers will be able to direct and “fine tune” the AI to suit their artistic style.
“[A]s I explained very carefully, DLSS 5 fuses controllability of the geometry and textures and everything about the game with generative AI, “said Huang, as reported by Tom’s Hardware. “It’s not post-processing, it’s not post-processing at the frame level, it’s generative control at the geometry level … This is very different from generative AI; generative AI for content management. That’s why we call it neural rendering. “
The official NVIDIA GeForce YouTube account responded to the criticism in the comments section of the DLSS 5 announcement video.
“What’s important to note about this technology upgrade – game developers have full, detailed creative control over DLSS 5 effects to ensure they maintain their unique game aesthetics,” NVIDIA wrote in a pinned comment. “The SDK includes things like intensity, color grading and masking where the effect shouldn’t be applied. It’s not a filter – DLSS 5 applies game color and motion vectors to each frame in the model, focusing the output on the source 3D content.”
Posting to X, NVIDIA’s global PR director Ben Berraondo said Bad Need for Residents The DLSS 5 demo was worked on by Capcom developers. Starfield Developer Bethesda Game Studios also wrote on X that “their creative teams will continue to make improvements [DLSS 5’s] lighting and the end result of looking in a way that we think works best for each game. All of this will be under the control of our artists, and can be chosen by the players.”
“With DLSS 5 the art style and detail shines without being held back by the traditional boundaries of real-time rendering,” Bethesda Game Studios executive producer Todd Howard said in a statement on Monday. “We are very excited to work with this new technology and look forward to delivering DLSS 5 Starfield and future Bethesda titles.”

Still, players remain unhappy, turning their anger towards the executives who develop NVIDIA’s AI tool. Although developers can inform or direct DLSS 5, using AI to change an image is not the same as doing it yourself.
“Todd realizing he doesn’t need to update the prehistoric creation engine because now he can fake pretty pictures with a snapchat filter,” wrote @sean_gause.
“If you want to improve paintings, hire talented artists to do it instead of exploiting technology. YOUR STUDIO WORK PREPARED FOR YOU – which they did in the first place without your permission, regardless of whether you choose to sell your soul now – that will only remove all creativity for middle AI slop that no one wants to look at,” wrote @homemadehooplah.
It’s not clear what data sets NVIDIA used to train DLSS 5, or how it got them. However, training AI models is a watershed area, where many companies are accused of using stolen or misused data.
NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 is becoming a grotesque meme
NVIDIA’s joint comparison showing its DLSS 5 model quickly turned into a meme. Social media users are sharing images of well-known characters, comparing them to similar but very different versions that have apparently been DLSS 5. These DLSS 5 versions are often very detailed, or heavily modified to have generic, high-spirited features reminiscent of beauty in pornographic images.
Several independent game developers have also gotten in on the fun.
