Tinder updates: More AI features, astrology mode, and more

Tinder recently announced several product updates at its first event, Tinder Sparks — from slyly teased AI to security improvements and an astrology mode.
On top, Tinder has “modernized” its look with a Liquid Glass design (like Apple’s) and full-screen images and content. The app also wants to improve the onboarding of new users by encouraging them to complete their profiles – from bios to multiple photos, instead of uploading a selfie. Plus, here’s a rundown of everything new coming to the dating app:

New features of Tinder AI
Like the other big dating apps, Bumble and Hinge, Tinder relies on the AI craze. This isn’t new – they’ve released AI-powered features before – but today’s announcement continues the trend.

First, there’s Chemistry, an AI matchmaker that’s already being tested in Australia and New Zealand, but is launching in the US and Canada today.
Chemistry is “Tinder’s AI-powered way to break dating fatigue,” according to Tinder’s press release. Chemistry will run a Q&A and scan your camera to “get a better feel” for who you are, and in return, Tinder users will receive daily curated match recommendations.

Camera Scan is a feature within Chemistry that helps find “Image Details” like your interests based on patterns in your camera roll. This appears to be similar to the Picture Picker, an AI feature Tinder released in 2024, which helped you choose a profile picture.
Similar features on the way are Visual Interests and AI-powered Enhanced Photo, which will reportedly highlight an individual’s favorite things and make photos clearer, respectively.

In addition, Tinder’s real-time recommendation system, “Learning Mode,” aims to quickly understand what you’re looking for and gather feedback to provide you with a better match. Internal testing of Learning Mode suggests that, for women who join Tinder for the first time, it is associated with a higher likelihood of returning to the app within the first week.

New ways for music lovers and stars
Earlier Tinder introduced College Mode and Double Date Mode, and now it continues the trend.
Music Mode was launched in 2021 in partnership with Spotify, but now Tinder has redesigned it. Music Mode will now prioritize profiles by shared likes and promises a better user experience. In an early test, 1 in 10 Tinder users under the age of 22 accepted it.
Then there’s the new Astrology mode, which likely builds on the Internet’s growing interest in astrology and is already having an impact on Tinder users. Now, users can add their birth data to “unlock” their Sun, Moon, and Ascendant signs and see corresponding information about possible matches. Women with Astrology profiles posted 20 percent more likes in early tests, according to Tinder.

Both Music Mode and Astrology Mode are live worldwide.
Inspiring more IRL sessions
Capitalizing on the IRL trend, Tinder is testing an Events in Los Angeles feature that lists local IRL events, allowing users to indicate their interest in attending. Tinder plans to partner with event hosts to offer opportunities to get out of the app and flirt in person, say, at a pottery class or trivia night. Both Tinder and Bumble have thrown IRL events in the past, but this is new.

If you’d rather stay at home but still want to see a date’s face, you can opt for a new video speed dating feature (also testing in Los Angeles). If the photo is confirmed (and all new US users need to scan their face to join the app since October of last year), you can join the scheduled speed dates, three minutes long. You can add more time if you like, or connect with more matches in real time. So much for Tinder in 2020!
Tinder security improvements
Tinder has long had twin features, “Are you sure?” and “Does this bother you?”, asking users if they want to send a potentially harmful message and telling them to report if the message makes them uncomfortable, respectively.

Now, Tinder is announcing that these features are (unsurprisingly) getting an AI-powered upgrade. “Are you sure?” “fine-tuned for accurate damage detection,” according to Tinder, while “Does This Concern You?” soon it will automatically blur potentially disrespectful messages.
Duolingo and Beli…on Tinder?
Tinder has had a Spotify integration since 2016, and now the app is introducing more partnerships – with language learning app Duolingo and restaurant review app Beli. Expect that to drop globally later this year.
“With more than half of our users under the age of 30, we’re building closer to the dating generation to feel authentic, low-stress, and worth their time,” Match Group and Tinder CEO Spencer Rascoff said in a press release.
