Looking for more clubhead speed? Remember these 3 keys

Hitting the ball long off the tee is something that all golfers should strive for. As advanced statistics have shown, the more distance you have off the tee, the easier the game.
That’s why we’ve seen so much growth in golf pro rankings in recent years. With statistics showing how important distance is, pros are focused on doing everything they can to improve their swing so they can squeeze every last yard out of their drives.
Recreational golfers may not have the luxury of being able to do everything about their setup – but that doesn’t mean there aren’t distance advantages to be had. In fact, with most novice players swinging the wrong way, there are even more advantages accrued to the weekend warriors over those available to the betters.
I discovered this fact first hand during a speed training session with GOLF Top 100 instructor Bernie Najar, where I gained over 10 mph of clubhead speed from where I started.
So, how can you see the same benefits? I have listed the three main keys below.

3 keys to increasing your clubhead speed
1. Increase your strength
Golf is generally considered a “recreational” sport. But if you want to hit the ball with your maximum power, you need to get rid of that idea.
Think of any other sport in which you will make your own history. In all of them, you will try to deceive yourself in advance so that you can give more effort. The same principle applies when training for speed.
“I’m a big believer in building momentum,” said Najar. “In your case, you need to increase your heart rate.”
For me, that meant doing a series of jumping jacks before hitting a set of balls. You can also choose a quick set of sprints or even just a brisk walk. The key is to get your heart rate up.
It may seem counterintuitive at first, but once you start hitting balls, you should see your clubhead speed jump up by a few mph.
2. Generate speed early
Have you ever heard the old golf saying “low and slow” when talking about the takeaway? Well, if you want to increase your clubhead speed, you should ignore it.
Hitting the ball long starts with moving the clubhead quickly, and that means on every swing – including the backswing.
“One of the ways to find out [energy] in the club to put some [energy] we got into it early,” said Najar. “We will start the club forward [of the ball] and rip it back.”
If you’ve ever watched the big pros at speed training (think Bryson DeChambeau or Matt Fitzpatrick), you’ll see that they take the club up as fast as they can. That is not a coincidence. If you want to hit it like they do, it’s important that you use the same strategy.
“Putting a lot into a golf club means you have to refresh it a little bit,” Najar said.
3. Don’t worry about accuracy
One of the most difficult things about speed training effectively is stopping the shooting effect. We as golfers are hard-wired to try to make the ball travel in the right direction with maximum accuracy. But when you train for speed, you can’t worry about where the ball is going.
“One of the things Kyle Berkshire can tell you,” Najar said. “When you’re in a speed session, if you don’t miss a lot, you’re not fast enough.”
There were a few swings during my session where I almost missed the ball – but that’s okay. Speed training is not about trying to hit fairways. It’s about maximizing your maximum clubhead speed.
One thing I’ve found helpful in dealing with this is to go indoors to the simulator and speed training without opening the shooting trail. What I put on the screen is clubhead speed and ball speed, and then I swing with my power.
When I do this, I don’t know where the ball is going. The only answer I have is my speed numbers. Every time I do this, I find that my speed goes up a little bit higher than when the tracer is on. If you’re struggling to let go of your partiality bias, I’d recommend giving it a shot.
