‘Being John Malkovich’ (1999)

Orson Bean, Cameron Diaz and others say Being John Malkovich.
USA Films/courtesy Everett CollectionCraig Schwartz (Cusack) is an unemployed puppeteer who ends up taking a part-time job as a filing clerk in an office between the 7th and 8th floors. While working in a strange place, he comes across a door that serves as an entrance John MalkovichIt’s the brain of every passer-by — and it spits you out on the side of the New Jersey Turnpike when the experience is over. Along with his attractive partner Maxine (Catherine Keener), Craig starts a frenzy that lets people know John Malkovich, but it causes his lonely wife Lotte (Diaz) to develop a strange relationship with the respected actor.
Being John Malkovich it’s a funny and unique film that manages to pull off its weird, ambitious theme with ease. Skillful direction from Spike Jonze, sharp screenplay from Charlie Kaufman and a committed group work together to remove everything, and what consequences the story really touches on identity, gender, the desire for fame and the principles of control and voyeurism. Meanwhile, Jonze, Keener and Kaufman were all nominated for Academy Awards.
‘Point of Interest’ (2024)
In 1943, Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel) is trying to build a life for himself, his wife Hedwig (Project Hail Mary‘s Sandra Hüller) and their five children while living in a luxurious house that sits in a bird’s eye view of the black smoke coming from the chimneys of the concentration camp. In his spare time, Höss takes his children out to swim and play, Hedwig works in the garden, and the family otherwise lives a normal, carefree life while the sounds of screaming, gunfire, furnaces and trains bounce off the wall of the extermination camp that Höss directs, and helps create.
Area of Interests a tense and often uncomfortable watch, adapted from the 2014 novel of the same name but instead based on the real life Höss and his family, who inspired the book’s fictional characters. The criminal charge of “misbehavior,” Area of Interests it degrades Nazi pathology from something beyond comprehension to something that might seem normal. The top-rated list of the best movies of the 2020s and the best movies of the 21st century overall, Area of Interests and received a much-deserved Oscar for Best International Feature Film in 2024.
‘Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood’ (2019)

It’s 1969, and while the flower children are riding the winds of change, aging television star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) struggles to adapt to the times. Rick made a big splash in the 1950s as the star of Bounty Law, but now he can’t find the meaningful work he longs for, as the siren song of Spaghetti Westerns sounds. However, his loyal double and best friend, Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), sticks by his side despite the lack of work. Meanwhile, Rick’s new neighbor, rising star Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and her husband, director Roman Polanski (Rafał Zawierucha(Damon Herriman) is said to live.
While the end of the Once upon a time… in Hollywood ends with a display of typical comic violence a Quentin Tarantino film, the movie may be the director’s most mature (and best) work. A love letter to 1960s Los Angeles rewrites Tate’s tragic history – perfectly composed by Robbie – while crafting a touching, bro-mantic love story between two best friends who would do anything for each other. With all the best Tarantino emotion on display, In Hollywood a comfortable watch that is fun, exciting and expertly crafted in almost every way.
