Will James Hagens Sign ELC This Season With Boston?

When will Boston Bruins 2025 first round pick James Hagens sign his ELC?

Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period joined Sirius XM NHL Network Radio on Wednesday with Steve Kouleas and Carter Hutton. There, he was asked about Boston Bruins prospect James Hagens and when he will sign his contract and if he will play with the big team this season?

NHL Rumors: St. Louis Blues, and the Boston Bruins

Carter Hutton: “What’s the plan with James Hagens? Like, he’s going to make that jump from the American League, because I know he’s in ATO, and how does that work with the Bruins? And the fact that, like, the playoffs are in right now, but it doesn’t mean they’re going to last.”

Dave Pagnotta: “No, the way things look, the Islanders are right there in the mix.

Lukas Reichel did well, but not the kind of addition I expected them to make, not the one they tried to make anywhere on the ice end. They tried to bring in the defense, they tried to bring in the top six/middle six guys. And it didn’t work out as well as they wanted.

And a lot of the thought process, at least, of not making a big improvement up front, is that Hagens was going to come in, but he’s burning a year of an entry-level deal if he does that. And that’s obviously and they’ve been, they’re obviously weighing the pros and cons of doing that, because of his status as a college free agent, he signs there, and it goes that year.

NHL Rumors: College Free Agent TJ Hughes

So him signing an ATO right now, with Providence, allows him to play the entire season there, and then they can sign him to an official entry-level contract after that, in the offseason, but of course, I’m not sure where they are there.

But I know that’s something they’ve been arguing about, and I think they want to see how they play in the next short term before risking potentially burning that year on his contract and signing him right away and missing the playoffs.

So it should; they have to decide here if the juice is worth squeezing. And they should cut it fast. “

NHLRumors.com Note: The Boston Bruins have a solid player in James Hagens. Hagens follows Charlie McAvoy’s path to the AHL first before joining the Bruins. Whether that’s in the playoffs or next season remains to be seen. But Hagens can still sign his ELC, as Cole Eiserman did with the New York Islanders. But GM Don Sweeney doesn’t want to rush Hagens because he knows he’ll be here soon.
