Revealed Call of ‘Buffy’ Reboot Wasn’t Moving Forward
In March 2026, president of the Disney Television Group Craig Erwichwho oversees Hulu Originals, called to update the team behind the scenes Buffy: New Sunnydale that the work was not going on.
According to Deadline, the two studios behind the reboot – 20th Television and Searchlight Television – have been in regular contact with the project’s producers and creative team. He continued, “And this doesn’t change any of that. And I promise if the apocalypse really does come you can still beat me.”
What Happens Next in the ‘Buffy’ Cancellation Saga
Gellar explained how she got the news during an interview with him People published on March 16, 2026.

Gellar finished filming the first episode of the reboot in August 2025. Gellar was told exclusively Us Weekly that month that it was “very emotionally draining” to work on the new Buffy project.

Deadline said there is no official news as to why the game was cancelled. One source close to the project compared the situation to completing a $3 million renovation until the house was found to have foundation problems.
“Instead of fixing the base, you just walk away,” they told Deadline.
