How Lincoln’s lawyer Written Officially Outside the Show:
Fans of Michael Connelly’s books or Lincoln’s attorneyThe first three seasons knew that Legal was an important game in Mickey’s life. As the former partner of Mickey’s late father, the retired criminal defense attorney had known Mickey since childhood. And when Mickey’s father passed, Legal became a father to him. Legal was single, divorced, and had kids who never spoke to him, so he really saw Mickey as a son. He always offered words of wisdom, trial advice, support, and inspiration. And the two often met to discuss the strategy of a delicious meal that a doctor of Law would not approve of. So how did Legal die?!

In Season 4, Episode 2, Legal showed up in court to support Mickey’s fight for innocence, and in Episode 5 the two had a special dinner date right before his case got heated. Mickey chose to protect Legal from the reality of his situation and did not reveal the fact that he might go back to prison. That’s how Legal got locked in Mickey’s office in Episode 6, not knowing he couldn’t get in. When Legal told Lorna he was hoping to get lunch at Langer and Mickey’s, she agreed and the two went out for a big pastrami sandwich with a side of legal advice. After a delicious lunch, Legal boarded the bus home, but before the episode ended, he was gone. When the judge gives Mickey the choice between a speedy trial or bail, he and Maggie go outside the courtroom to deliberate. A tearful Lorna approached and said, “Law has had a heart attack. He was on the bus, and we were talking. I thought everything was fine. He’s gone, Mickey… I talked to his son and they’re going to try to make a funeral in the next few days.”
After hearing the news, Mickey cried on Maggie’s shoulder. She encouraged him to post bail so he could go to the funeral, but at the last minute, Mickey decided to stay in jail – partly to preserve his right to a speedy trial, but also, in my opinion, because he wasn’t ready to face the reality of a country without Law.
While Mickey did not attend the funeral, Lincoln’s lawyer he still gave her and Legal a touching goodbye scene in Episode 7. While in jail, Mickey dreamed that Legal came to visit him and gave one last speech. When Mickey asked, “What would I do without you, Law?” He replied, “The same thing you did with me. Figure it out. There’s an old Chinese proverb. A wise parent gives his children roots and wings. I saw it on the fortune cookie at Yang Chow. We gave you roots. Your father and I both. Now you have to spread your wings, child. Don’t worry too much. I’m here.” BRB, crying! In the finale, Mickey also speaks of Legal Wisdom at a key moment in his case, indicating that his legacy will live on.
Why You Did Lincoln’s lawyer Legal Murder? Why Elliot Gould Went Lincoln’s lawyer?
Since Lincoln’s lawyer Season 4 just came out and the story is being kept under wraps, the creator and stars have not talked about Law’s death and whether it was a creative decision. But with health and nutrition concerns established in Season 1, the Season 2 finale saw Legal receive tests to “do sure the old tick still has enough juice,” and Season 3 saw him in the hospital for a heart attack.

Gould and Legal brought warmth, heart, humor, and wit to the series and will be greatly missed. Law played an important role in Mickey’s life, he was calm, comforting, and wise. So it will be interesting to see how Mickey fares — personally and professionally — without Legal in Season 5. Before we say goodbye, let’s honor Legal with some of his iconic quotes:
- “If you have the facts, strengthen the facts. If you have a law, make a law. And if you don’t have another, make a table.”
- “If you want to represent those who break the law sometimes you have to be one.”
- “There is no better cause in this world than representing the wrongly accused.”
- “I’d always bet on you, kid. Just take care of my boy in the ring.”

After sharing the news of Legal’s death, Lincoln’s lawyer ended Season 4, Episode 6 with a tribute card that read, “In Memory of Ken Kern.” Although the details of Kern’s passing are unknown, the rep confirmed that Kern was an auditor for the series.
