What Critics Are Saying About ‘Drama’

The first updates are out DramaA24’s hot drama starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson.

Directed by Norwegian writer-producer Kristoffer Borgli (Dream Scenario), the film also stars Mamoudou Athie and Alana Haim. The plot is said to follow a young engaged couple who are put to the test when their wedding week turns upside down.

Early reviews have been mixed; however, there seems to be consensus among critics regarding the quality of Zendaya and Pattinson’s best performances.

In his review, Deadline’s Pete Hammond explained Drama as a “funny, but very honest film” that may “not be what you expect going in at all, but it is tied up to spark a spirited conversation on your way out.”

Hammond also praised Pattinson’s efforts in the film, describing his time as “the best work of the career.”

Canada’s CBC described the film as “imperfect, controversial, and interesting.”

The publication said there is an “infinite amount of talk we have yet to have” about the film’s much-talked-about twist, but warned it could alienate audiences.

“Pattinson and Zendaya’s hilarious, squirm-inducing, finger-pointing comedy has a greater chance of alienating mainstream audiences than angering them,” the review read.

The Australian press was furious Drama, describing the feature as a “disgusting, one-star mess” in a critical review. But there was high praise from the UK newspaper, The Guardian, which said the film successfully “delivers on its promise.”

“Drama he has the tasteful, witty, tasteless style of his previous film Dream Scenario, and both surpasses his mysterious narcissistic comedy Sick of Myself,” the newspaper wrote.

“It gives us the angst, the angst, the psychological breakdown that’s more cleverly described than in other films that are more targeted. And it gives us what the title promises.”

Mashable described the flick as a “hilarious comedy” while US Today praised the lead actors, describing both Zendaya and Pattinson as “strong” on screen.

“Zendaya’s is the stronger of the two, she is dealing with the difficult feelings of marriage and her world is rapidly collapsing around her,” the newspaper wrote. “Right now, Pattinson is like a manic roller coaster on screen, going off the rails as the weight of Emma’s show makes Charlie question everything and react negatively to the situation. Then there’s Haim, full of venom and vitriol, who, depending on one’s perspective, is either a low-key hero or a movie villain.”

In a four-star review, Empire Magazine said Drama “it’s funny how cruel and sharp Borgli has shown himself to be an expert.”

β€œIt veers toward the arch cringe comedy he explores in his excellent second feature I’m sick myselfan equally bad drama about a woman who is so jealous of her partner’s success that she lies about her serious illness,” the magazine wrote.

The Independent made a bold prediction and explained Drama “as the most uncomfortable film of the year.”

Drama you ask questions that I’m not sure I have the answers to. And that makes me uncomfortable.” The newspaper wrote: “It makes me feel exposed and challenged. It makes me want to talk about it with everyone I meet. And if that’s not the point of art, what is?”

Drama hits theaters April 3.
