In a three-part article, Jay Manuel recalled that he realized he had to leave the show after season 8.

“There was a time when the design of the show started to change. We were supposed to show the background of what the fashion world is – help change the industry,” he said.. “But the show had changed in a way I never expected.”

Manuel “really struggled with some of the things” that happened – including the concepts of photography as a “race-changing” idea. “That was a bit of a drain on me and it drained my spirit,” he commented. “It was time to tell Tyra that I wanted to leave the show.”

While discussing his time on the show, Manuel noted that there is a “version” of him on the show that is “not really” him.

“Tyra always insisted, ‘We need to keep it fun. We need to keep people watching.’ “There were definitely moments where you’re watching, and you’re like, ‘Oof,'” she said. “But it wasn’t my place to tell them.”

How Did Jay Manuel Tell Tyra Banks She Was Leaving ‘America’s Next Model’?

Miss J Alexander, on the other hand, did not see what Manuel was planning. “He [keeps] everything in his chest,” he explained, “He hides himself a lot.”

Manuel wanted to tell Banks in person about her exit, sharing, “I knew I had to tell her first. So I sent her an email expressing my gratitude for this opportunity and being able to help her see that I’m trying to move on with my life and my career.”

Banks “didn’t hear back” for three days before simply replying, “‘I’m disappointed.'” After that email, Manuel recalled how “all communication just stopped” before he was pressured to return for at least one season.

“My job had changed. I was no longer a producer. The thing I was responsible for producing according to my contract was the final runway. Now I had the ability to take pictures,” said Jay Manuel. “I started paying attention to what was happening behind the scenes, that’s when I started to learn the art of storytelling.”

Manuel questioned how realistic the show was, adding, “If there were some girls who didn’t do well in the shoot, I would be pushed aside and say, ‘Okay, we have this story with this person, we need them to go forward for at least a few episodes.’ Because if the pictures are just crazy, it’s going to be hard to say, ‘This person deserves to stay in the competition.’”

What led to Jay Manuel’s exit from ‘America’s Next Top Model’?

In 2012, America’s Next Top Model underwent a significant change after the head of the network changed. Tyra Banks was forced to get on the phone with the show, where she was ordered to fire Miss J Alexander, Jay Manuel and Nigel Baker.

The issue of Jay Manuel and Tyra Banks intensified when the news of his dismissal was leaked to the public.

“We were going to put out one press release, and they said we’d all get a discount on this press release,” he recalled. “We always see it on television shows, people saying, ‘Someone has decided to break up.’ And Tyra, she’s like, ‘We’re going to put out in our press release how we’re going to continue working together.’ So we agreed to that.”

After being stripped of the ability to “move on with their careers with grace,” Manuel, Miss J Alexander and Nigel Baker appeared in an interview about the firing where they were asked if they felt “blindsided” by the decision.

“We had to speak carefully, according to the contract at that time,” said Manuel. “There are only certain things you can talk about in terms of production and what you can say legally.”

The bank also examined how his working relationship with Manuel ended.

“It was probably one of the most difficult issues I’ve ever presented, in my life,” he said. “I cried myself to sleep that night. You know? They were there from the beginning. They were some of the closest people in my life and I had to deliver that news that the deal was over and done with. You can imagine how that felt.”

He continued: “But managers have managers, and the manager was very clear – there are no sacred cows, I heard that saying, ‘You too Tyra. And the thing is, I don’t believe they knew it was coming from the top. No matter how much I explained, ‘This was not our decision.’ To this day, I think it was me.”
