Primary Day in Republican-controlled Mississippi, where House and Senate races are held in the Deep South.
But a congressional special election 200 miles to the east in the battleground state of Georgia to fill a vacant congressional seat held by the GOP will likely draw more attention across the country on Tuesday.
The race to fill a seat in Georgia’s solidly red 14th Congressional District — in the northwest part of the state — was left vacant when MAGA Firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene stepping down in early January. Greene left Congress a year into his term, after publicly falling out with President Donald Trump.
And a special election is being held as Republicans hold a slim 218–214 majority in the House. The GOP cannot afford any surprises and allow the Democrats to make noise in the special election, in a district that Trump carried by 37 points in his 2024 presidential victory.

22 candidates initially applied for the vacant seat, but this number was reduced to a full 17 candidates, after a few withdrew from the race.
All candidates, regardless of party affiliation, are on the same ballot. And if no candidate comes out on top with 50% of the vote in the primary, the two contestants will go to a runoff on April 7.

Trump endorsed Clay Fuller, one of 12 Republican candidates in the race.
Trump teamed up with Fuller, the district attorney for the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit, when the circuit was set up last month. Speaking before the president at an event in Rome, Georgia, Fuller described himself as “a hero of MAGA.

Another candidate is Sen. Former state Colton Moore, a Trump supporter who enjoys a lot of support from the right.

Among the three Democrats vying for the seat is retired Brigadier General Shaw Harris, the Democratic nominee who lost to Greene in 2024. With $4.3 million raised, Harris is the top fundraiser among all 17 candidates.

While Fuller is considered the favorite thanks to Trump’s endorsement, with just three Democrats in the race, Harris has a shot at one of the two runoff spots with no candidate exceeding the 50% threshold in the primary.

In Mississippi, Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith faces a primary GOP challenge — as she seeks a second full six-year term — from physician and author Sarah Adlakha.
Rep. Bennie Thompson, Mississippi’s longest-serving current congressman and the only Democrat on the caucus, faces two major challengers as he seeks an 18th two-year term in the House.
