Tiger Woods declined the Ryder Cup captaincy following his DUI arrest

Team USA will not have Tiger Woods as captain for the next Ryder Cup, after Woods’ recent controversy.

Woods officially declined to captain the Ryder Cup on Wednesday as he stepped away from golf after pleading not guilty to a drink-driving charge. Woods’ SUV clipped the back of a trailer and flipped onto its side last week on the road near his home in Jupiter Island, Florida.

The Ryder Cup decision of the PGA of America was not surprising given the last five days that have covered Woods since his arrest on Friday.

“The PGA of America fully supports Tiger Woods as he steps down to focus on his health and wellness,” the statement said. “We commend Tiger for prioritizing his long-term health and deeply respecting the courage required to make a personal decision.”

The PGA of America added that Woods had “shared with us” that he would not be captain.

Woods posted a statement Tuesday night saying he was stepping down for good “to seek treatment and focus on my life.”

A motion filed Wednesday by his attorney, Douglas Duncan, asked the judge that Woods be allowed to travel out of the country to begin “comprehensive medical treatment.”

Duncan said Woods’ doctor’s recommendation was based on the golfer’s “complex clinical presentation and urgent need for a level of care that cannot be safely or effectively performed in the United States as his privacy has been repeatedly compromised.”

“Continuous medical tests and social exposure create significant barriers to his care and can lead to complications and inability to fully participate in treatment.”

Martin County Circuit Court Judge Darren Steele approved the proposal, which did not specify the location of the inpatient facility.

Woods sought treatment at an inpatient facility at a Mississippi clinic in January 2010 after being caught in a series of extramarital affairs, and his agent said he sought treatment at another inpatient clinic after his 2017 DUI arrest.

“I am committed to taking the time necessary to get back to a healthy, strong, and focused place, both personally and professionally,” Woods said in a statement.

Woods also turned down an offer to captain the Ryder Cup for the last time, waiting until the early summer of 2024 to tell the PGA of America he didn’t have time. That led to Keegan Bradley being nominated more than a year before the 2025 games on Long Island, New York, which Europe won.

Three players on the Ryder Cup committee – Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth and Bradley – play in the Masters, the first major of the year.

Luke Donald has already agreed to captain Europe for the third time in a row, having won two Ryder Cups. No captain has won three times in a row.
