There’s nothing like a movie night with your friends. If you want to develop a sense of friendship, why not ditch the rom-coms or crime thrillers and watch some movies that show life-changing friendships like the ones you share? These five movies range from funny to sad, but all have strong emotions […]

‘Superbad’ Is Honest About What It Really Is Like

Even worse stars Jonah Hill again Michael Cera as best friends Seth and Evan, respectively – two kids about to graduate from high school but with their girlfriends still intact. With a plan to get the girls they both desire, they use their invitation to a house party as a way to get into Jules’ grand plans (Emma Stoneand Bekah (Martha MacIsaac). When Seth offers to serve the group alcohol, his lack of identity becomes a major problem. But it becomes a big problem when they involve Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), their arrogant friend with a fake ID, who falls in between two gang-loving cops.

The screenplay was written by best friends from high school Seth Rogen (who also appears in the film) and Evan Goldbergwho started writing it when they were young. Therefore, much of the acting and dialogue feels natural to how high school students would behave. Although many depictions of youth in modern-day movies and TV shows may only scratch the surface, Even worse it seems to unlock something that nothing else can. Cruelty, bad humor, lust for sex, relentless swearing and profanity are as true in 2026 as they were in 2007. Teens have terrible, foul-mouthed, small-horned dreams: Even worse it gets this, and the movie feels authentic because of it.

Jokes Still Funny Almost 20 Years Later

If you were a teenager in the late 2000s, Even worse it was inevitable. A picture of a fake “McLovin'” ID was plastered on t-shirts, and everyone was saying “Oh my god! The best story I’ve ever heard in my life!” to be mean, and we couldn’t stop laughing about “You know how many foods are shaped like d–ks? The best kinds!” Even worse it was a time of Millennials kicking ass, but it still manages to get a laugh out of a minute, even after nearly two decades since its release in 2007. A large part of that can be attributed to Rogen and Goldberg, whose successful comedy partnership has endured on projects like the recent Emmy-winning juggernaut, Studio.

But at the same time Even worse it was tightly scripted, the development encouraged by its talented cast, especially the young ones. Hill, in his standout role, gives the characterless, angry, horned young man his life, while Cera (who starred in Arrested Development) makes fun of him by getting jokes about misbehaving. Together, they often build each other’s conversation by releasing an ad. Then there’s the real star of the show, Mintz-Plasse, as the scene-stealing Fogell; significantly, it was his first film. With the best performances of the actors, the gold that the ads offer and the sharp script, it’s no surprise. Even worse he still makes us laugh.

‘Superbad’ Is An Incredibly Touching Portrait Of Male Friendship

By the end of the movie, between the hormone-induced urges to feel a woman’s touch, the penis jokes and the woman’s antagonism, you might forget that. Even worse includes an incredibly poignant scene just before the line. At the end of their wild night, after failing to escape sex and getting into an explosive fight, Seth and Evan reunite, cozying up in their sleeping bags at Evan’s house and pouring their hearts out to each other. Throughout the film, there has been tension between them, fueled by Evan and Fogell entering the same college, choosing to live together and Seth feeling left out. He doesn’t want his best friend to leave him.

Seth and Evan admit all of this and apologize to each other, and in a moment of rare vulnerability that might seem unfamiliar to high school boys, they admit that they love each other, and hold each other. As much as Even worse he is remembered for being a non-stop display of bawdy humor, rarely punctuated by touching displays of platonic male love. It’s a beautiful and emotional scene that emphasizes the love that exists between young boys, even if it seems like something they can’t do yet – or feel ashamed to express. Men should feel good about telling their friends that they love them, so Seth and Evan do, and it’s really sad (and funny).

Broadcast Even worse now on Hulu.
